4 Djarum's MS players are in the draw: Andreas Adityawarman [7], Bandar Sigit Pamungkas [8], Andi Nugroho Saputro and Engga Setiawan.

Looking at the draw, Adit and Bandar should have no problem reaching the Semi-Final. Bandar will face Saurabh Verma in R32, followed by probably another Indian player in R16. His QF opponent could be Rohan Castelino or the third-seed Irian player Ali Shahhosseini. I believe he could beat either player and should face a tough match against the top-seed Andrew Smith in the SF.

Gepeng probably has the worst draw as he will immediately have a tough match against Abhimanyu Singh in R32. If he can win that one, Andrew Smith will await him in R16.

As for Adit, he will face Tarek Shalhoom in R32, followed by an Indian player, Dibjayjoti Borah probably in R16, and then the fourth-seed Ankush Jadhav in the SF. If he progresses to SF, the second-seed Kaveh Mehrabi or the fifth-seed Boris Kessov or Engga Setiawan will await him. Engga has to beat Ricson Rebello, followed by Kihilesh Sarma in R64 and R32 respectively. Boris Kessov will await him for sure in R16 and if he can beat Boris, then Kaveh Mehrabi will present a tougher challenge.

If Bandar can beat Andrew Smith, then I think it should be an all-INA Final.

#1 seed Andrew Smith likes to energize himself by complaining a lot... making himself angry, making his opponent angry... Andreas Adityawarman loves to make his opponent sleep due to lack of variety in the game played... [the unfortunate side-effect is that the audience and even the judges can also fall asleep]... :p

Conclusion: Fire will be difused by calm water... :p

Hmm... In case Sony or LCW withdrew due to injuries/sickness... Andrew Smith might actually qualify for the MS SS Finals... I wonder if he might just skip Bahrain Challenge and concentrate in preparing himself for the SS Finals... :p

Or... on the other hand, he might also think... "Forget it mate, I will have to play Lin Dan, Taufik, Chen Jin, Peter Gade, Joachim, Sony & LCW [if not injured]... the only person I can realistically beat is Chan Yan Kit... what difference will 2 weeks make... :p I'm going to play and win in Bahrain!"

But he does get free ticket and accomodation + participation fee in Kota Kinabalu :D That might just change his mind. Also, with Chen Jin and Lin Dan probably not participating in the SS Final, Andrew might just make it.

    Results of first dat

    From Gulf Daily News:
    Smith makes winning start

ANDREW Smith of England cruised into the men's singles third round while a few other seeded players fell, as the Bahrain Air-Bahrain International Badminton Challenge got underway yesterday at the Indian Club in Manama, reports PATRICK SALOMON.

Smith, ranked 18th in the world, comfortably defeated Iran's Omid Karami 21-16, 21-12 to begin his campaign on a winning note.

The men's singles top seed had a bye in the first round, as did Karami. Smith now faces Indonesia's Nugroho Andi Saputro, who won his second round encounter against Indian Abhimanyu Singh 21-19, 21-16, also yesterday. The match is scheduled to be played today at 3.30pm.

Meanwhile, India's Rohan Castelino and M Vyasan registered the tournament's first major upsets with wins over seeded rivals.

Castelino took down third seed Ali Shahhosseini of Iran 21-19, 21-16, while Vyasan stunned sixth seed Clemens Smola of Austria 21-15, 21-13.

Both victors, who are from the prestigious Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in India, join Smith in round three.

Fourth seeded Ankush Jadhav from India was also upset. Iran's Mohammed Reza Kheradmandi won in the late night tie 21-13, 21-13. Other matches in the men's singles and doubles categories were played late last night.

The tournament's opening ceremony was held on Sunday evening. It was attended by Bahrain Badminton and Squash Federation (BBSF) president Shaikh Hussam bin Isa Al Khalifa, who lit the traditional lamp, formally declaring the tournament open. Also in attendance were Bahrain Air commercial operations director Mohammed Saleh Fakhri, BBSF vice-president Abdulaziz Al Muraikhi, and officials from the BBSF, Bahrain Air, and Indian Club.

A total prize purse of $15,000 is up for grabs in the tournament, which is approved by the Badminton World Federation and Badminton Asia Confederation.

Indian player Jwala Gutta was the only leading overseas entrant to withdraw from the competition, as she is nursing an injured ankle.

    Yesterday's results:
Men's singles: Sidharth Saboo (IND) bt Faeez Matar (SYR) 21-15, 20-22, 21-12; PK Jamsheed (IND) bt Unnikrisha Pillai (BRN) 21-16, 19-21, 21-0; Chris Nicolaides (BRN) bt Fadi Saimir (SYR) 21-13, 21-13; Michal Matejka (SVK) bt Jayakumar Pullani (BRN) 21-15, 21-11; Nawras Abdulwahid (SYR) bt Anirban Chetia (IND) 19-21, 21-9, 21-12; Engga Setiawan (INA) bt Ricson Rebello (IND) 21-8, 21-7; 1-Andrew Smith (ENG) bt Omid Karami (IRI) 21-16, 21-12; Nugroho Andi Saputro (INA) bt Abhimanyu Singh (IND) 21-19, 21-16; M Vyasan (IND) bt 6-Clemens Smola (AUT) 21-15, 21-13; Sidharth Saboo (IND) bt Ebrahim Jaffar (BRN) w/o; Rohan Castelino (IND) bt 3-Ali Shahhosseini (IRI) 21-19, 21-16; Ammar Awad (SYR) bt PK Jamsheed (IND) 21-18, 22-20; 8-Bandar Sigit (INA) bt Saurabh Verma (IND) 21-18, 21-13; Angshuman Bora (IND) bt Chris Nicolaides (BRN) 15-21, 21-15, 21-11; Michal Matejka (SVK) bt Dibyajyoti Borah (IND) 17-21, 21-12, 21-19; Ebrahim Jaffar (BRN) bt Nawras Abdulwahid (SYR) 21-13, 23-21; Mohammed Reza Kheradmandi (IRI) bt 4-Ankush Jadhav (IND) 21-13, 21-13; Engga Setiawan (INA) bt Nikhilesh Sarma 21-6, 21-7.

All INA players should have progressed to R16 where Andi Nugroho Saputro (aka Gepeng) will now play Andrew Smith for the first interesting match of this tourney. Engga Setiawan might also be playing Boris Kessov, while Andreas Adityawarman and Bandar Sigit Pamungkas should progress to at least SF pretty comfortably.

Saputro and Sampada oust top seeds

TOP seeds Andrew Smith of England and Charmaine Reid of Canada were both stunned last night as ranked players continued to fall in the Bahrain Air-Bahrain International Badminton Challenge, being played at the Indian Club in Manama.

Smith succumbed to unseeded Indonesian Nugroho Andi Saputro in a tightly contested three-set match in the men's singles third round, while Reid bowed to India's Sampada Sahasrabuddhe in straight sets in the women's singles opening phase.

Smith was forced to battle back from a set down before bowing 19-21, 21-14, 14-21 to an inspired Saputro, who will now face Sidharth Saboo of India in the quarter-finals.

Saboo beat compatriot M Vyasan 21-17, 21-2 in their match.

Smith, the British number one and presently world number 20, was the strong favourite to take the singles title.

He was joined on the sidelines yesterday by men's second seed Kaveh Mehrabi of Iran, who was toppled by Indian Gurusa Rajah by the narrowest of margins 17-21, 21-15, 19-21.

Fifth seed Boris Kessov of Bulgaria was also sent packing. Engga Setiawan of Indonesia took the win with surprising comfort 21-5, 21-9.

The men's quarter-finals will be played today, starting not earlier than 5pm.

On the distaff, Reid was shocked by unseeded Sampada 19-21, 13-21.

"Beating the top seed has given me a boost in confidence," said Sampada, who did not know she was playing against an Olympian in Reid.

"If I knew, I maybe would have been a little more nervous, but I had never seen her play and I just believed in my game.

"I was playing well enough in the first set despite an erratic stroke which cost me some points, and in the second I was in complete control. I'm looking forward to the rest of the tournament and continuing my good start."

Reid's defeat meant that the three top-ranked women were no longer in contention for the division crown.

Second seed Filipa Lamy of Portugal and third-seeded compatriot Telma Santos, were both absent from their respective first round matches yesterday, giving their opponents a walkover win into round two.

Fourth seed Nicole Grether of Germany was also in. She beat Aparna Balan of India 21-14, 21-16.

The women's quarter-finals will take place this evening, starting 6pm or later.

In yesterday's men's doubles matches, number one seeds Ali Shahhosseini and Mohammed Reza Kheradmandi of Iran beat Angshuman Bora and Nikhilesh Sarma of India 21-14, 21-18.

The tournament is being organised by the Indian Club at its badminton courts, in association with the Bahrain Badminton and Squash Federation.

A total prize purse of $15,000 is up for grabs in the tournament, which is approved by the Badminton World Federation and Badminton Asia Confederation.

Tournament sponsors: Bahrain Air, Babasons and Megamart, Devika International, Eastern Ready Mix, Al Hamad Construction, IPS Trade Middle East, ITL Tourism and Travel, Bader Trading and Contracting, MH Al Mahroos, Orange Graphics. Medical assistance: KIMS Bahrain

Men's singles: Nugroho Andi Saputro (INA) bt 1-Andrew Smith (ENG) 21-19, 14-21, 21-14; Sidharth Saboo (IND) bt M Vyasan (IND) 21-17, 21-2; Rohan Castelino (IND) bt Ammar Awad (SYR) 21-11, 21-12; 8-Bandar Sigit (INA) bt Angshuman Bora (IND) 21-6, 21-11; 7-Andreas Adityawarman (INA) bt Michal Matejka (SVK) 21-7, 21-10; Mohammed Reza Kheradmandi (IRI) bt Ebrahim Jaffar (BRN) 21-10, 21-12; Engga Setiawan (INA) bt 5-Boris Kessov (BUL) 21-5, 21-9; Gurusa Rajah (IND) v 2-Kaveh Mehrabi (IRI) 21-17, 15-21, 21-19.
