    Hi all,

Recently I fell down while playing the badminton and suffered a left Shoulder Dislocation. Please note I am a Right Handed player but my left hand is dislocated.

I am more worried whether i will be able to play badminton again .
please help with the following info.

1.How much time it will take to heal fully
2.How much time will i need rest before resuming badminton practise.
3.What further care i need to take so that Shoulder Dislocation doesnt happen again.
4.Are there cases in past where Shoulder Dislocation had happened.
    Thanks in advance

Well, at least it isn't your right shoulder.
You will still need to be careful though.

    Please seek specialist advice.
You will be better off consulting a doctor.
Do not rely on anonymous 'medical' tips.

My Friend, it was so awful to hear about ur injury , cuz injuries are the calamities for a sports man i guess,
any ways what u should do is to let ur arm recover its strength and let it take some extra bit of time then start playing at a relatively lower level to make sure its all healed .
during this time u do ur physical workout in order to not to loose ur shape and consistency .
    best regards,
    Arslan.

I dislocated my racket shoulder a few years back but also tore my rotoator cuff. Its imperative that you seek a sports injury specialist as soon as possible. He will be able to advise the correct course of recuperation, dont delay!

Damn, reading about your injury scares me. I'm gonna have to be careful while playing lol. Good luck with your recovery.

It's very likely that you will be able to play again, especially as the injury is to your non-playing shoulder.

Nevertheless, shoulder dislocations are fairly serious injuries. You should get good medical advice (not from here, and not even from me!) and be patient while you rest and recover.

Following a dislocation, it is usually possible to recover a significant amount of your previous ligament function by physiotherapy. However, it is likely that some permanent ligament damage will remain. It is normal for ligaments to become looser after a dislocation; consequently, each dislocation increases the chance that you will dislocate the joint again.

While you may never recover 100% of the stability originally provided by your shoulder ligaments, you can supplement your shoulder stability by muscle strengthening and stability exercises (again, from a physiotherapist): good muscle condition can improve your shoulder stability. This may help protect you against future dislocations.

    KRPRAKAS,

You should have seen a doctor 10 days ago when you started this thread. It's unlikely this will stop you from playing but why just take our words, go see a doctor.

These are all questions you should be asking your doctor. If your doctor cannot answer them himself, he should refer you to a specialist who can.

Every injury is different. For example:

Well, based on my experience of shoulder injury, it will take about a year. :p

But your injury is different. It's probably not going to take a year, but how am I supposed to know? I have only limited medical expertise, and I've never met you. How am I supposed to make a good diagnosis (or prognosis, for that matter) under these circumstances?

    hi Gollum,

    thanks for the reply.

Its true that you cant diagnosis remotely.

Do you mean to say that my recovery takes more than one year?
Pls do advise me regarding the rehabilation process and also about any shoulder supports that can prevent further dislocatiion.

    No.

My recovery has taken more than a year. I have no idea how long your recovery will take, because your injury is very different from mine.

Rehabilitation will require you to rest at first, and then begin some exercises to help your shoulder recover. This should be under the guidance of a physiotherapist, or other medical specialist with knowledge of sports injuries.

Since your injury is a dislocation, I expect that these exercises will mainly involve regaining fine control and awareness of your shoulder (proprioception), and specific muscle strengthening to augment your shoulder's stability.

You should probably avoid stretching or other exercises designed to increase the range of movement at the joint. After a bad dislocation, joints tend to become excessively mobile, and so it's undesirable to make them any more mobile. However, if your shoulder has been immobilised in your arm sling, then it's also possible that your mobility will have been greatly reduced; and then stretching will be necessary. You see how much the treatment depends on the exact details of your injury?

Your doctor has prescribed an arm sling. This will help protect your shoulder by limiting its movements. If the sling is secured with a strap around your back, so that the arm can be held securely against the body, then you may benefit from wearing this sling when you start to play badminton again: it will help protect your shoulder from any violent movements of the body.

Long-term protection from slings or braces can be effective in some circumstances, but it's more commonly used for less mobile joints such as the knees. The shoulder, being the most mobile joint in the body, is difficult to support through the use of motion-limiting braces.

Of course, you could just have the joint immobilised completely (as in a plaster cast), but that's not very practical. The best solution is to improve your shoulder stability through physiotherapy.

    Just a word of caution:

If you resume playing with your arm still in a sling, you need to be very very careful not to lose your balance. After all, the injury was caused by a fall.

Your non-racquet arm (your left arm) is critical to maintaining your balance when moving fast. The best thing you could do is wait a while before you go back to regular badminton. Of course, the length of time you need to wait is for your doctor to recommend.

As mentioned earlier, go and have a chat with your doctor before you decide you must head for the court :)

    Thanks all for your advice.

As of now I'm not planning to play with Arm chest sling.
Next week Doctor shall remove sling and put me on physiotherphy.
I shall dedicately complete it ..and wait atleast 3-4 months and then go to court,
And even in court i will play only doubles that too standing in the front.

my greatest worry being to avoid recurring dislocation..while enjoying the game.

    regards,
    krishna
