I started because my best friend got me into it. I play now to surpass him. And my gf plays too. And i suck at most everything else, this sport came the easiest to me. And i'm slightly addicted to it now.

Competitive and it's a racquet sport! I also play table-tennis, just my skills in badminton surpasses beyond that of my "ping-pong" skill.

ah the days where i thought i was decent at ping pong. then i went to an asian college (UCD) and learned i was unbelievably wrong. I am absolutely horrid at tennis. My next best sport is basketball of all things.

then comes to the speed, accuracy, technique, power, flying up in the air when jump smashing, get sweat after couple of rallies (with same or higher skilled player)

It's really fun, challenging, releases stress, stay fit, and is a good exercise for both physically and mentally. Improves your eye-hand coordination, mobility, balance, strategy, and concentration...

I hated team sports (soccer, basketball, etc.) because I was always viewed as the weakest player, despite trying my best.

Badminton was the only sport I could actually be good at.
Badminton is all on the individual. Your own abilities.

there is so called double, and that involves two players, wouldn't that consider as team?

perhaps he's a singles only kinda guy.

I play both, simply because it means i get to play more. and more is better.

But i actually prefer doubles. I was always a team sport kinda guy, thus the basketball addiction for 13-odd years. What a waste. I wonder how good I'd be at badminton now, if I had a coach since then.

I think that's not what he meant. He probably plays both and the reason he doesn't like other team sports because it usually involve large number of players on court (ie basketball. soccer, etc). With 2 players, it's easier to communicate and build up teamwork.

    Thank you Gemcat

Although you may be in a "team," you use your own individual abilities to support your partner and yourself. The same ideology goes for your partner. If you lose a game, you have yourself to blame.

Well, that's how I think of it.

Thumbs up Why do u play badminton?

For the love of the game since young.......passion.
Besides that there are so many things involved:

    (1) Deception
    (2) Accuracy
    (3) Fitness/stamina
    (4) Power
    (5) Speed
    (6) Skills n strategies
    (7) Mental Strength
    (8) Agility
    (9) Smartness
    (10) Teamwork.
Best is,there is no body contacts and rough handling as in rugby or football.

Its the only sport I can imagine I can still play competitively when I am over 60. All you need is skill and deception and you can beat even some of the younger crowd.
