    How tall are you?

I'm 13, and i'm 185 cm. The players nowadays are about my height. Does it help if you're taller or shorter?

Nah! Don't worry about that - whatt matters is your dexterity and speed around the court. Many tall people are slowed down by their height and inability to go don for low fore-court drops or smashes but the ones who get thro competitition despite their height obviously have great reaction speed. Short people may have to do more work simply because of shorter arm (reach) and legs (getting up and getting to shots). GongZC for example is almost a midget which is one reason the China BA did not think she was going ot get anywhere - but she showed all of them how to doit without the physical advantages.
Basically eye-hand co-ordination also determines where you get your shots because you need those to read the opponent's incoming shot and direct yours to his most vulnerable spot at that moment. That spot may be different each time because it may simply be that he has not recovered his balance or is expeting a standard return cross court or clearance overhead and you do something unexpected like sharp cross-court to the opposite side. It goes on like that. So height is just one factor sand maybe not so important if you have good reaction time, reflexes and determination.Ar eyou a fighter? John.

All other factors being equal, height is definitely an advantage!! eg. Hoyer-Larsen, Morten Frost, Peter Gade, Chen Hong,Wu Wenkai, Zhao JH, Ji Xinpeng etc etc.(all 180 cm & above).
Shortly , we would be able to watch two relatively tall players in action on TV, Bao Chunlai (ht.185cm) vs Lin Dan (at least 180cm) in the Denmark Open finals.
Gong ZC is comparatively short but by no means a midget , (163 cm ) for a lady!!, cf the great Ye Zhaoying (175 cm)!!

Don't be too worried about your height, this is to those of you who feel that you are too short, like me! argh...... Well i'm 1 of the shorter 1s in my group, i'm about 172. Everyone else is taller.........

But i don't find the height really is that much of an advantage....... just look at Gong Zhichao......

    I agree with Byro,

I think what is most important is that u need to have a good movement arnd court! It does not matter how tall u are but how was fast u are is the key!

apart from all this is anticipation adn u shoul try to use ur shortness as ur advantage!

i think over teh yrs teh greatest have been not too Tall1

    Re: by the way

This happened in one junior tournament to me and my partner.
    I stand 5' 7, (That's about 170cm) my partner about 5' 9 but really thin.
Our opponents were the prev years winners and stood around 6 feet with big frames. On going on court, one of them said "come on kids"!
My partner and I just looked at each other in amazement.
That guy changed his tune at the end of the match after losing.
A very satisfying feeling at the end.

    Neil,
Looking again at your e-mail, your 1.85 makes you pretty tall - i.e. 6 ft, so what's your worry? You want to be shorter? Don't try - you'll end up with a hunchback to to stooping to try to be about the same height as your friends.
However, at 13, you must expect to be 'all legs and arms", somewhat unco-ordinated and still capable of significant addition to your power, unless you are a natural - in which case you never go thro this awkward phase of growth and just win again and again. John.

    Ahoj Neil,
I guess that being shorter is an advantage. I am 198cm. I was never beaten by taler guy. All palyers that succeeded to beat me were shorter ;-)

Man, i think u shoudl try your luck with basketball mate! u are playing teh wrong sport! U expect a badminton player to be taller than 198 cms then u might have to wait a further 30 urs when plp might tend to become taller and minght average somewhere near your height!

So best of luck! U could call ur self the tallest Badminton player that most would have met!

    Re: How tall are you?

Neil, I'm 195 and I've always considered that a strength in badminton. Your length won't make or break you as a player, as long as you adopt your playing style to it. My suggestion to a tall player is to concentrate on offensive playing, as there is where your extra reach will really give you the upper hand. Combine sharp and steep attacks with being hard to "overplay" and you will really disturb a lot of short players...

    Don't worry, and good luck!

    I am 166cm... about 5'5" (i think)

I noticed that most tall players do not know how to use their height advantage. At least most of my taller opponents don't. It's the shorter ones who are harder to beat. They tend to run around fast light Mighty Mouse.

What! I expected u to be a bIg guy but not as Tall as That! I shall tell u a real Incident in my life! My dad's Company makes leather Jackets for exporting!

When my bro was going to the US for his higher studies we went to teh factory to pick up something that he might like!

They showed us some which were designated to Sweden and palces like Denmark adn Russia! Me and my borther were able to get inot it and mind u I am 185 and he is 182 and both of us are fairly built for an Indian or an Asian!

What do u guys eat! No offence but then i woudl never get into teh same ring with you Guys!

I agree with Mag abt using height when dropping and playing steep smashes but then hey u just make sure u Kill in teh first stroke or else u would be left stranded somewhere at teh back court if teh opponent plays a drop! So have fun and Use ur advantage Neil!

Well, I'm quite fond of Chicken Tikka, actually ;)

Seriously, though, I'm glad I'm not taller actually. Over 195 is when you start getting trouble finding clothes and shoes that fit... My girlfriend's brother is the tallest person I know. He's 198 and has 47 in shoes (that's about 13.5 to you Americans and 13 to you Brits)... He has to go to a specialist stores to buy sneakers! Not to mention that he can't sleep in ordinary beds... (He doesn't play badminton though!)

    It's all good

Taller is better for offense.(easy to smash)

    Shorter is better for defense.
