how do the professionals court managment measure the speed of each rally or smash at the end? are there sensors or cameras.. or what is it?
because i'm watching the european finals 09 and each time the rally is over, a number gets displayed on the four corners of the court and im pretty sure it indicates the speed which the shuttle was travelling at. so how do they do it?

I'm guessing it's the same way as they do in tennis - radars. There is a way of working it out from films though.

For radar or the video method?

For radar, I recommend you check this out. This is the best I could find about the other method. They used a stopwatch but you can do it if you know what number of frames per second (fps) a video was recorded at.

thanks for the research, i think they calculate it thru video... you know... distanced travel over time...
hmm... we'll have to see, any experts here that have had experience with this?

with tennis i heard from the commentary that the speed is captured when the ball leaves the hitter's racket .. therefore the highest speed as the ball will always be losing speed along the way ..
i believe it is the same with badminton coz no way the shuttle can maintain a speed of over 300kmh (super smashes) average especially as the shuttle loses speed much much faster as compared to the tennis ball :p

    and already he replied:

    ----------

    Dear Mr. van Veen

Thank you for your interest in my article. So far, I’ve never heard about any official speed measurements in badminton and hence about any standards in that. However, there are some rumors that other teams also used the shuttle travel distance of one meter over which the shuttle speed is measured.

    Kind regards,
    Christoph Stamm

    Dear Prof. Dr. C. Stamm,

I read your article (ShuttleSpeed - High-speed real-time video processing in badminton) about measuring shuttle speeds with great interest.

I was wondering: is there a conventional / normal travel distance that is used standardly as the distance over which the shuttle speed is measured.

Like, in your article, one meter? I'm always wondering how I'm to interpret the displayed shuttle speeds given in broadcastings of major events.

    Thanks for your time!

    Kind regards,

    Hans van Veen
