Hallam ends her badminton career Evening Telegraph Friday, February 27, 2009 BURTON badminton ace Tracey Hallam has announced her retirement from the sport. The 33-year-old, from Hanbury, confirmed yesterday that she is calling time on what has been a highly successful career. Hallam – England's number one women's singles player for several years – leaves with a lengthy list of honours to her name. She won gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, four years after collecting silver at Manchester and eight years after taking bronze in Kuala Lumpur. Those medals added to three successive golds in the team event. She also claimed two English national singles titles and one women's doubles crown – partnering Spondon's Donna Kellogg last year – as well as a string of titles on the international circuit. Hallam also played at two Olympic Games, reaching the singles quarter-finals in Athens in 2004 and the third round last year in Beijing. The left-hander first represented England in 1997 and went on to make 81 appearances for her country. During a decade at the top of her sport, she climbed as high as seventh in the world and reached the last eight of three consecutive world championships – battling back from a career-threatening ankle injury which sidelined her for six months in between. On the international circuit, Hallam won titles in Taipei, France, Vietnam, Romania and Israel – but perhaps her best performance at an open tournament was at the 2006 Malaysian Open, where she finished runner-up. "Since the Olympics in Beijing, I have had chance to take stock and I think now is the right time to stop," said Hallam. "I have a lot of happy memories, particularly winning my first English National title by finally beating my great rival, (eight-time champion) Julia Mann, and then winning the Commonwealth gold medal. "That made up for the disappointment of losing in 2002 against a player I had beaten in the team event (Li Li, of Singapore). Having won a women's doubles title at the 2008 English National Championships without any preparation, I would have like to have carried on playing doubles but it wasn't to be." Hallam will be watching many of her former team-mates at next week's Yonex All England Championships at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. "It's a great tournament and brings back many happy memories," she added. "But there are other tournaments which are also special. I have fond memories of my success in Taiwan and Vietnam, and of reaching the Malaysian Open final."
March is Tracey Hallam's birth month. In a few weeks, she will be 35 years old! It's amazing that she managed to win yet another title (at the 2008 English Nationals) so late in her career.
