    Unhappy Clearing

    I had "try-outs" for varsity today and basically all we had to do was show the coach how good our clearing was.I can clear from the back of the court and get it to the coach at about his shoulder when he's standing at the first green line,but he keeps telling me I need to go higher.How do I clear with having shuttle cock go higher so that it goes over my coach's head?All I have to do to get off jv is to get a good clear that goes past my coach.

    It's all about technique and you need someone to show you that technique. Have someone more experienced watch how you're hitting and correct it.

    Hmmmmmm,the coach just tells me I need to reach higher.Is the clear like a serve in tennis then?I remember serving in tennis,I was awful at it because I could never hit over the net,but then I practiced hitting at the highest point I could throw the ball.Do I just need to practice hitting shuttle cock over my head then?

    You should aim to hit the shuttle at its highest point when its directly overhead. Good preparation of the shot is the key. If you let the shuttle come to low then you will lose alot of distance and time.

    i got taught this the other week what you have to do is bring your racket right behind your head and smack it at its highest point thats basiclay what the coach told me lol

    It sounds like the problem may be just that your clear is too flat, rather than too weak.
    If this is the case, you need to make sure the racket face is angled more upwards on contact.
    This means hitting the shuttle earlier/higher.
    You may need to stand further forward - you should be slightly behind the shuttle when you hit it (I do not agree that you should hit it while it's directly overhead), but if you are having to reach too far forward to hit the shuttle, it will go in a flat/downward direction (racket face angle is the only major difference between a clear and a smash).

    If the problem is with a lack of power, then I think you need someone to take a look at your whole hitting action, and see what you're doing wrong.

    hit the shuttle a little bit earlier. make sure its at its highest point possible with a full arm extension and youl be fine just takes practice and good technique.

    aim for it like a smash
    like use your other hand and aim then hit it as a clear
    move your arm to wear you will flick your wrist then clear it
    you should do some wrist training if you don't clear high enogh

    my 2 cents... hitting at 45 degree angle gives u the max range... though its difficult no doubt.. practise is the keyword.

    Hitting it with the racket angled 45 degrees will just turn it into a smash...unless you meant that the trajectory of the shuttle leaving the racket should be 45 degrees.

    Yeah, 45 degrees is too steep for maximum distance - it would be alright for a ball, but due to the very rapid deceleration of a shuttlecock, you need to hit it flatter if you want it to go further.

    personally when i coach, i keep it as simple as possible as kids tend to go huh??

    clears - sideways stance (non racket foot forward, racket foot behind. elevate front arm to point at shuttle in a way thats comfortable for you, rear arm is pulled back like a bow and arrow technique.
    as the shuttle approaches do the following in sequence:
    1. elevated arm comes down immediately followed by
    2. hitting arm following through in a throwing action, hitting shuttle at highest point aimining upwards and over opponents head.
    3. at the same time as step 2 your legs swap places - rear leg follows through and becomes the front and vice versa.

    Remember hit the shuttle at highest point.
    Use wrist snap for power.
