Hi everyone, i just have a question i want to ask. I feel a sharp pain in my shoulder everytime i do a smash or a overhand dropshot. Other than that it doesn't bother me at all. I can lift up my shoulder no ploblem without any pain. I can even do a basic overhand swing without any pain. The pain only kicks in when i do a smash. But the pain gets really dull and numb after a few painful swings so i can play with only a little discomfort or none at all sometimes. I was just wondering if anyone had the same problem as me and if it's okay to keep on playing simply because the pain gets dull after a while. It would be great if you could give some advice or suggestions. Thanks.
Rest it for a little bit and see if that helps. If you're not used to straining you arm/should muscles and you're new to the sport, it's bound to ache at first, it'll get better in time though. If not, it might be a technique problem so get a coach or more experienced player to check your smash out.
could be any number of things, most likely is a pulled/overstretched deltoid muscle this may explain the pain being there sometimes and after a few shots it warms up and hurts less. Though it could be much more serious such as floating cartilage and you should see a doctor if the pain persists after resting.
I had exatly the same issues before, but when i jumped it also hurted alot around my right shoulder (right handed). It is a muscle in your back is overstrained, and when you "activate" that muscle it will feel's like aches. The answer to get rid of it is to rest. I know it's boring but give it a week and if it's not gone i would see a doc.
you have to open your eyes to lots of different possibilities. Dont think youv strained a muscle when it could purely be your shoulder muscles are underdeveloped or lack the strength to comfortably push the power through the shot. When you say the pain goes dull or numb it could actually mean your muscles are fatiguing really quickly. Which ofcourse refers back to the lack of strength and development. My advice would be to Give badminton a few days off.. you dont need a week or more for a basic muscle repare if youv strained a muscle. If there is a tear or superior damage you would need alot more time but in this case you wouldnt be able to swing or lift your arm without knowing about the injury. After your few days without playing begin some basic excersises to increase your shoulder strength. EG pushups. Does your chest, forearms, triceps (depending on how close your hands are), shoulders. Medicine ball, weights or anything with significant weight to it. Raise it with extended arms straight out in front then up above your head and slowly back down. This excersise can also be incorporated into situps. EG do a situp as your back is almost at the ground take the weight or medicine ball in the same motion mentioned above, back above your body and behind your head then back to your knees then continue a situp and repeat. If overtime your still feeling pain there may be some minor damage to a tendon, or even a joint problem. Do not go to your doctor. Go to a sports physician or sports injury specialist. Your doctor will say oh you have strained a muscle take a few days off. = waste of time and it doesnt fix the problem.
See a specialist in the first instance. Its quite likely to be some sort of tendonitis which in turn is a symptom of something else such as shoulder imbalance. A specialist will be able to diagnose the problem and suggest the right course to take for recuperation and exercises/stretches to minimise future problems. Rest in needed
I used have this problem too, and i have since went to a physiotherapist at sports medicine center. My advice to you is: 1. warm up before your game by doing lotx of shoulder/arm rotation. 2.Then learn how to control your arm together with your shoulder blade, as in both must move together. 3.Once your feel that you can control both, seek to strengthen your shoulders. Go to gym, do overhead pulls, or rotate your arm with a light dumb-bell at slow speed, the idea is control here. Meanwhile, rest and do not exercise!
I have a similar bad pain that has pewrsisted for several months. I have tried to rest as much as I can but still play a bit. Mine was the result of trying to overhit the smash and hyperextending the shoulder joint too often. I can now smash happily infront of my body, but as soon as my arm goes past vertical then the pain is huge. Rest is best, but also to include exercises to stabalise the joint - ie rotator cuff muscle group, and latissimus dorsi. I need to rest.......i'll try.....nearly the end of the season!
i'm a 2nd year physio student, and i guess i'll try give this prob a punt. i am guessing that you've hurt your biceps tendon which inserts into your shoulder. your biceps pretty much flexes your arm forward, (smash), it might be tendinosis (change/remodelling of your tendon becuase you've hurt it). i'm thinking that its not that serious right now becuase you can raise it okay and stuff but when you use big forces it hurts. probably early stage of damage, its probably best if you take a rest for a week and dont over use that shoulder, 2ndly if it still hurts i think you should really see a specialist as overuse injuries are a pain in the butt if you dont deal with them early. and also since its shuolder pain, we cant rule out problems with your muscle strength of your rotator cuffs which stabilise your shoulder joint. its hard to really specifically diagnose online, but i recommend you try rest 1 week like at least, ice it when it hurts, to stop inflam if any, if still hurts please see a specialist, its not worth risking a shoulder injury
Go and get it checked out by a doctor or even better an orthopedic surgeon. I had pain in my shoulder and it turned out to be a torn rotator cuff requiring surgery to repair it. Better safe than sorry...
I have that problem too. My badminton coach said to put ice to freeze the muscle (if it's your muscle) if not then like others said go see a doctor or go to a sport physiotherapist
I had a similar injury/pain when i smashed and went to see a physiotherapist. I recommend you do the same, especially if has not improved with periodic rest. I forget all the technical jargon, but basically the physio diagnosed mine as overstraining the shoulder and recommended a program of manipulation and stretching which has helped greatly in my case. As the others have indicated, depending how severe the problem, you may need anything from stretching, steroid or surgery and rehab.
I had a similar problem with my shoulder recently and went to see a physiotherapist. I forget all the technical jargon, but basically my shoulder is overstrained & was particularly tight due to badminton & my work. So the solution was to do a particular posterior cuff stretch regularly & some manipulation which has helped greatly. As the others have said, it may require anything from stretching, medication or surgery & rehab. So if the injury has been ongoing for months and not improved with periodic rest, i highly recommend you go see a phsyio as soon as possible. Goodluck.
