When I was playing for fun (like 6 years ago) they were still doing long serve for singles. What happen to it? now everyone serve short double OR single... I was never able to do the short serve, and ever since getting back to playing 2 days ago, my long serve is like short 99.9% of the time now. Maybe it's time to switch
in professinal games the long serve is very rarely seen anymore, mainly because if your playing someone with a very strong attack, serving high can give them the attack stright away, this pretty much leaves you on the back foot before you have even really started. i have a few problems with the short serve myself, i tend to serve it fast at their acttual body, this often causes a weak return. then again iv only been playing afew months so im still a beginner in many respects.
What JonH said. If you're playing a pro, then a high serve just hands them the chance to attack from the outset. If you're playing at regular club level though, a long serve is still the way to go, as the average opponent won't be able to do much with it, and it leaves you in a better position for the next shot.
thanks, I guess I'll stick to the long serve (and try to work at it). I'm not sure if it's my string, my technique or the nylon bird, but it doesn't matter how hard I serve, it fly high but hit right at the freaking double serve line (back line)... The string IS 6 years old, but it's been in the bag for the whole time, so I'm wondering if the tension is gone already.
In modern badminton , frankly speaking, u are looking for trouble, if u are serving long. Players like Lin dan , Taufik, or even Lee chong wei will smash u down !
I think Sketchy is right on. Most of us don't play against LD that often. If you get birdies on your face all the time, you know it's time to serve short.
WYH used the long serve to very good effect in the AE final. I think it is more fashion than anything. It is not dead, and at most of BC members level if executed correctly it is likely to be a usefull addition to your armoury.

Well, yes as others mentioned for pro players it well be like "kill me now." But female professional players they still serve long(if i'm not mistaken). I still think you should work on both.
If you get birdies on your face, it's time for practice some smash defence . And by the way - if your opponent hits birdies "on your face all the time", he surely will be able to attack the short serve in singles even more devastating.
I may be wrong but people stop using the long serve just like people stop using the cab 20 or something. The short serve is just an improvement just like a new racquet with technological advancement.
I believe Kenneth Jonassen used the long serve frequently when he played; or else it was just the position used to play the long serve, but used to hit short serves.
I'm getting a little sick of the long serve... basically this is what happen. Me long serve... my opponent has the following choice 1) half drop/smash to my back hand (and this is a shot where I'm extremely slow to get to and normally don't) This is pretty sick, for some reason he can a pretty good angle and hit it dropping before the service line at pretty fast speed, he gets me 7/10 times on this shot. 2) clear it back (rarely) 3) smashes to the side. I'm playing with my friend, this dude knows my habit... The short serve seems to work better. It leave him with the choice 1) clear it back 2) drop it back (much slower than the drop from the top)... I'm gonna start serving short from now on, much safer IMO.
Your friend is missing a few options... he can also push it to your base drive it towards you drop it to the corner away from you I cannot see how his dropping it back can be slower than his drop from your long serve.. unless your long serve only went half court.
he has a bad net drop, his net drop is very very obvious and for some reason slow (sort of a float drop), from the back he developed a decent hit. and as always, when you hit the bird from the top down, it always goes really fast vs something under up. and we're sort of noobs, so driving back isn't an option in single, where you can serve long/short, he's force to stay a little further back from the service line (VS double).
I am absence from the game of badminton for 10 years after schooling. Recently wanted to pick up the sports again. I do realise that most players do not play long serve and wonder why. Gotten the answer here. Thanks.
