I was playing on Sunday with a friend. I serve, he attempts to hit it back and fails. Then he says that there was a lady walking on the court on my side behind me, so he insists on playing the point again, and I lose the point.

Is this how it should go?

He should not hit it if anything that disturb or not ready. But if he hit it then it consider point count.

    Yeah should be your point.

If he hit it - its your point , if he left it you can replay the point.

But sometimes give them a chance :D - Its only recreational play :D

Well, sounds like he's making an excuse.

However, I will not say that for sure. There are few times, I was about launching a stroke, then suddenly see a person either passing by the back of the court (courts laid very close to each other), or trying to pick up a shuttle hitting from the other court, or even worse, little kids running around, then I have to try my best to hold it back. Some times, I either completely miss it (on purpose), or end up with a very low quality stroke (can not totally avoid the contact due to timing). Of course, I usually shout it out, to warn the opponents not to move to avoid accident at the same time. If such a case, I think it's fair for a "let", to avoid any accident.

As there is no video or umpire's judgement,it is merely depends on the judgement of you both.

And i agree if he's not ready, don't hit yet. Perhaps new service.
It's not an official match i suppose? So, take it easy.
