    Hi,

I was just watching some taped videos of the sydney olympics to notice that Candra and Tony do choke the handle when they are defending and attacking. I have been trying this recently to notice the racket head speed is alot quicker. I was wondering though....alot of us grip our rackets to the cap (the top of the handle), if you hold the racket higher up the handle, your thumb will begin to slip on the cap etc. But is it worth gripping OVER the cap, that way, your thumb could be there, you could hold that racket higher up the handle for faster racket speed AND your thumb wouldn't slip when defending/attacking. What do you think?

    Matt

I grip over the cap..... makes my racquet look ugly lol.. but AB900 is an ugly racquet anyways... (I like it though!)
Are you talking about putting grip above the cap? Like gripping some of the shaft or something?

Well yea... it feels better.. with the grip there... at the net.... before I didn't put grip that high and gripping the metal is sorta uncomfortable... with the grip there makes it feel better:) I think it's a comfort thing.. doesn't affect performance thattt much... maybe a little..

Matt, why don't you just try it to see if you like it? I choke up a lot in doubles so personally I like to wrap the grip a fair bit up on the shaft.

Matt, to answer your original question. i thikn a lot of us actually wrap our grip all the up covering the cone. if you check out the pictures that was uploaded of our rackets. i know at least Cheung and i do it.

however, even so i do it, i don't grip it up that high most of the time, the only time that i consistently do it is during the short service. the delicate control of the short service really benefits from a shorter racket length.

another point is. if you are observing Sigit/Candra type of gripping, you should be aware that they are the minority. i think only S/C grip their rackets *that* high, Sigit is literally gripping on the shaft most of the time during the game, even on a jumpsmash, and even then, he hits harder smashes than most people.

Just got a new digi cam!! :) (Was given to me..... one of those intel webcams..) :).. but it's better then my old "poloroid fun digi cam" which I never used haha... ) SOOOO I'm gonna experiment with posting pics..

This is pick of my grip on my carlton AB900...

NOTE: MY GRIP WRAPPING iSN't GOOD AT THE CAP... because of the awkward (retangluar based pyrimid (spelling) ) shape.. They should make the cap cone shaped like yonex ones! :)

Mag, since you are are so tall, the distance from your shoulder to racquet head when choking up might be longer than for me from shoulder to racquet head without choking up. I would expect you to choke up most of the time for doubles.

I forgot... it might be one of my victor grips... but the reason it looks kinda screwed up is because the grip under has ribs....and I thought it would be cool to wrap a flat grip over one that has ribs :)

It means holding the racquet higher that where you usually hold (for me that is, I hold it at the end of the racquet because I only play singles and seldom play doubles). They usually hold it just below or on the cone, thus the reason wrapping the grip on the cone.

    Howdy all,

Well, yup i tried on one of me old crappy rackets to see what it was like, and i must admit it does feel really nice! I am holding about half an inch lower on the picture of Candra and Sigit and i must admit it does feel really nice, especially at the net where i am geting really fast reactions, even full blasted drives. It's these little things, i feel, that we all need to pick up on, and why the Asians are running away with the game.
