China badminton team head coach Li Yong Bo indicates that they need to collect more opinions before they make a final decision on Bao Chun Lai surgery. And the decision only can be confirm by the end of this week. Bao said whether to go for surgery or not also not a problem for him.

After training that day, Li Yong Bo says: "We haven't decided on Bao's surgery. We'll communicate with him, and ask for more expert consultation. After that I'll discuss with the coaching team. Going for surgery is a better choice for him, but we don't have a 100% success rate also. There's National Athletic Games this year, elite athletes are important for the country, so we have to be more careful.

Bao Chun Lai's injury is an old injury on the knee cap. Li Yong Bo said Bao is tall, and he is more sensitive to pain.

"If the pain doesn't affect training, Bao doesn't have to go for this surgery. But if it affects a lot on training then I suggest eliminating this pain." said Li Yong Bo.

Bao did a NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) when he played in the German Open, doctor in Germany suggest him to undergo surgery as soon as possible. Bao says: "I can't decide, and have to ask for more opinions from the team. If I really have to then I think I should take it earlier. Cause this injury has been annoying me for many years."

The training for Bao is more focus on power now. The training is for the stability and power of his knee muscle.

The chance for Bao to participate in the World Tournament is small, due to his injury. His lost in All England and Swiss Super Series cost his chance to reach the World Tournament qualification as points accumulation is not enough. But he is now more concern on how to overcome his injury.

How long to wait until Bao's fully recovery, if he's going for surgery? Li Yong Bo: "The medical treatment in Germany is advance, so he could be fully recovered in maximum 2 or 3 months."

Knee problems are nothing to sneeze at....just ask any number of BC'ers.
(Wait until the digits in your age are reversed and you'll see.:p)

BCL and his coach sound like they are taking the wise cautious approach. The results from knee surgeries can be wonderful but it is not always predictable. So it is smart for him to get several opinions and think about what might be career saving or career ending surgery.
Let's all wish him good luck.

Speaking from experience, Western doctors tend to advise surgery without really looking at how this can be avoided.

I suspect it is not a huge problem for Bao, but may affect his state of mind. Surgery is risky as depending on the problem and extent of surgery he may not recover. If it was a simple op, then he would hav eprobably had it already.

i say go for it, the german doctor saw it serious enough to warrant immediate surgery.
If bcl hope to play at 2012 OG, the surgery would give him that hope, status quo wont.
When bcl retire one day, the surgery expense will be from his pocket, better to have the team pay for the operation now.

I partially agree, but the story indicates that LYB says if it affects training, he will have surgery. Seeing that he hasn't yet, then you would have thought it doesn't affect training:confused::confused: but in that case, when does it affect him? and is it a problem?

    Just my 3 sens..

..knee injuries and surgeries can have different results and effects; and yes, like Fidget wrote "it's nothing to sneeze at"..
I think team CHN is looking & grading BCL's performance in his tourneys, along with his training sessions. If he keeps pushing himself and doesn't bring out any positive result, then perhaps surgery and rest are the best way to go.
I also think, if team CHN doesn't have any pressing urgency to use BCL's service (in the upcoming Sudirman Cup), then i'd say taking half of this yr off and undergo the surgery might not be a bad idea.
Of course, at the end, it will come down to BCL, himself, to decide what's best for his career/long term future.
..or not from his pocket if he moves to say..................................Canada??..;)

    1. he has to wait some more before getting his citizenship, then he'll get it free.(or come here, do it, and skip town:D)
    2. germany would still have better high tech surgery of this type (but i could be wrong on this)

on a serious note, bcl have decide what he want in life.
If he want to continue to be a so so player, give up his runner-up specialist title to a QF specialist or lower, then he can just hang around and watch the young guns get better. If he want something more, i say go fix his knee for badminton AND post badminton, and do it now. Nothing pressing right now.

Don't come to Canada for knee surgery. The surgeons only know microfracture, shaving and abraision.

The most advanced 3rd generation ACI is from www.codon.de in Germany. In some cases, the implementation can be done through scopes without the need to open up the knee.

The cartilage attached to the knee cap is a real issue. ACI does not work with that part of the cartilage.

The other problem might be a seriously misaligned knee cap.

Knee surgery may or may not help a sportsperson’s revive his sporting career.
    It depends on the following:-
Major or minor surgery; knee-cap replacement or repairing a torn cartilage or cleaning up bone spurs
    • Age
    • Body constitution
    • Discipline of the sportsperson following surgery
    • Diet
Tiger Woods (knee) and Lleyton Hewitt (hip) have won tournaments following their major surgeries. They are young and very disciplined.
Vijay Singh has not won a single golf tournament after his knee arthroscopy (minor knee surgery). He failed to make the cut in two tournaments. He is also very disciplined and works very hard. However, his age of 46 years has slowed the full recovery of his knee mobility and strength I am sure he will fully recover in due course and go on to win golf tournaments.
As for BCL, I say he should go for the knee surgery. He is only 26 years old and very disciplined. He will recover and will continue to win badminton tournaments. He may not be in the league of LD but how many are?

Don't put words in my mouth. LCW at his best can beat LD but he is consistently inconsistent and he has overcome the inconsistency.

LD is no doubt the best badminton player in the world. Being aware of this, he sometimes takes it easy and takes his opponent for granted on the assumption that he could catch up even if he loses the first game. But the opponent who won the first game becomes confident and exerts even more effort in the second game and goes on to win the game and the match.
