After reading this forum and other sources, I have discovered there are a couple of stringing methods that are available to us stringers. What I have been unable to find out is whether it matters if you use 1 or 2 piece stringing with them. The methods are: Proportional stringing method (i believe there is another thread on this topic but a could not find an answer to my question) Adding 2lb/10% to the crosses. (i had been told that this is only used with 2piece stringing but i would like conformation) I know there are very experienced stringers in this forum, and i hope someone will be able to help me with my query. ps I know these topics have been covered before but i could not find answers to my questions. If someone does find something in the forum that i have missed, i will apologise now for my ignorance. Thanks, mtr
I use the 2 pc method and what you have posted is correct. I also add 2lbs on the tie-offs to tighten the slack created by the knot.
Could I also ask a question ? I know a lot of stringers talk about the 10% rule , but when stringing at 30lbs + do you string 3lbs higher or 2lbs higher? Because some people say its the 2 lbs rule some say 10% rule ?
Most people have a slightly different theory but either is generally fine for tensions in the lower 30s. When you go for higher tensions, as said, people do different things - Pete tried the 10% for one ultra high tension job but then went even higher and used the 2Lbs rule, he and Optiblue seem to think 2Lbs offers better frame shape so you'll probably want to be trying that as both are very experienced and great stringers.
Is there anything you can do with 2 piece that you can't do with 1 piece. I am about to embark on a high tension (28lb+) string job, but would it be safe for me to do this with one piece?
2 piece is just generally perceived to be better. I think tension holding is one of the main benefits. I don't think it would be unsafe but as said, most people prefer 2 piece - they just think it's generally better. There probably are some other benefits but I either don't know or can't remember these
I rarely string a racquet past 28lbs. 2pc is preferable when string high tensions. A 2lb difference in the cross would not work when using the one pc method as eventually, the tension would all equal out......theoretically.
Thanks thats cleared up 2lbs/10% for me. What about the proportianal stringing with regards to 1 piece stringing?
Proportionally, should be okay as the racquet is made with one side longer than the other. the 1pc stringing method may look a little fatter than the 2pc method, but should be fine as I use to string racquets with main and cross the same tension and never had an issue.
I only do 2 piece stringing as well. I also apply the 10% (2lbs) higher on the cross strings. I also don't prestring, just do it all on the machine.
