After ASIAN GAMES, PBSI will make a total change to the Indonesian women team players. They must be 170 cm tall at least and must have high IQ.... Maybe it is because the present players are not that tall...

But I guess the IQ thing is a bit ridiculous.. I guess those players who have been staying in PBSI has high IQ level.. though they realise it or not, but I do... so i kinda disagree with this new idea... Its okay to come out with new ideas, but please make sure that the idea make sense.. not just any kind of idea....

    You're kidding, right?

If not, what's your source of information in this case?

This is not one of those threads to "inflame" discussions about men vs women, is it?

Vow. If Susi Susanti is still playing, she can't make the team.

interesting rule. i guess they are trying to imitate the Chinese team, where most of the players are really really tall.

good point though, Qidong, and GongZC won't make it either, and these two will be legends in a few years time.

the height restriction is marking a trend in the women's single development. countries are now favoring ladies with enough height. i wonder if that's a good thing or not. i enjoy watching GongZC play more than say GongRN.

Hmmm, I read online in one of the Indonesian websites a few weeks
ago (was it satusports? I forgot) that the minimum will be set to
165cm for women and 170cm for men. It didn't mention anything
about IQ requirements. And this is for new players coming into
the national training program, so it doesn't apply to the current
team members. Seems like 170cm for women is a bit too
tall for most Indonesian women players, I guess, so not sure
how accurate this new information is. Sporty, would you mind telling
us where you got the information? I'll check other sites on my own
    to verify this new development.

    That is ridiculous!
Which means no matter how good a player is, but as long as he/she doesnt meet the height requirement, he/she will be disqualified to represent his/her country?

Doesnt it SPORTS is for everyone that doesnt count on gender, race, look, height, weight and etc?

    what a discouragement, duh!

I agree with this idea tho (not the IQ part :D but the high limitation) and yes Nic, sports is for everyone that doesn't encounter with gender, race, look, height, weight. But think again, they ain't normal players, they are professionals ! Don't get me wrong on the high tho, I do enjoy watching GZC playing, but tall people really has the advantage over short people e.x. attacking angle, cover better courts, etc. Hence, I think its a pretty good idea on the high limitation.

That is not convincing enough, I still think the idea is ridiculous and UNFAIR.

Let's say if I am only 160cm and I am able to beat a Professional player. Are they gonna shut me out of the door to represent my country?

I have seen so many "real" good players who can easily beat others player who are taller than them.

    What the...?!!

    Sporty, you are right!!!

I went to satusports again and found this new article regarding what
you posted earlier. It is indeed true that the PBSI head, Chairul Tanjung,
decreed the 170cm minimum height for women players and
in additon, their IQ levels cannot be low (no figure on minimum
    acceptable IQ, though. 120 perhaps?)

According to the article, the following players will be rejected:
Lidya Djaelawijaya, Ellen Angelina, Yuli Marfuah, Atu Rosalina.
It is not clear if they are being forced out just because of
failing the new height requirement or also because of their
perceived low IQ. It also mentions that Minarti Timur is being forced
to retire, although I think she already made that decision herself months
in advance after not being selected for the Asian games team.

Well, I'm quite sure (and hope!) that this is not final yet.
Chairul Tanjung may be the PBSI head, but he's more of a businessman
rather than a sportsman and his decisions are sometimes out of touch.
I'm hoping that more rational PBSI officials who are really knowledgeable
    about badminton will overrule him.

    Nic,

I agree that all sports should be open to everyone of all shapes, sizes, etc.
who want to play them. And of course, in Indonesia anyone can pick
up the sport and nobody will stop you. But I think in this case where
professionals are involved and there is training cost to think of, the idea
is that Pelatnas, the Indonesian training center, will only take in players
meeting the requirements, implying that they are only willing to
subsidize the cost of training players who are taller and smarter
and so supposedly have better chances of doing well in international
tournaments. For those players who don't meet the requirements, I think
they will still be allowed to represent Indonesia if they prove their worth.
Cases of this in the past include Ellen Angelina and Yuli Marfuah, who were
kicked off the national program but taken in again to represent Indonesia at
various tournaments after they proved their capabilities. The main idea,
I think, is that Pelatnas being short on the finanacial side only wants to
spend money on those with better chances of winnning internatinal
    tournaments.

If PBSI set the IQ standard on the players, they have to do the same thing to themselves also. If they are setting such a dumb regulation, I believe 90% of them won't meet the IQ standard level.

What's next? Maybe they should also include a requirement that the players be able to play both left and right handed in order to confuse the opponents. No need to learn the backhand stroke.

How about players must have a minimum reach in order to get to the shuttle earlier and be able smash steeper, etc?

Is PBSI going to impose similar requirements for the men too?

If this is going to be the case, I will be rooting for this to fall flat on its face.

maybe because INA LS players are having more difficulty again the chinese equivalent than their MS's equivalent. Personally i think the PBSI is desperate for a quick fix. However, PBSI had forgot or ignored the most important criteria in selecting potential national players, the desire to win and be the best in badminton.

Quite right. Players with equal level of ability, the taller have advantage over the shorter one.

For us common mortals, there's no difference between tall/short; strong/weak; fast/slower players for us there are a lot of flaws and defficiencies in our game. For the elite, everything counts. Often an inch difference could decide if a rally is won or lost.

Also for a player to be able to reach to a high level of play, he/she needs exceptional ability to self-evaluate and learn the intrincacies as abstract logics of the strategies. I remember my coach mentioning in the early 80's a Chinese top player was dropped (the player is tall, about 185cm and very good skills) because he could not understand the intrincacies of the strategic play.

I can see some reasoning behind the Indonesian Badminton ruling. However, potential players do not always possess all the 'ingredients'. Coaches have to work with whatever they have in their hands. So far, Indonesia produced only one Rudy Hartono or Susi Susanti.

Definately a strange policy considering the players Indonesia has produced. Trikus and Ardy wouldn't get a look in.

The announcement implies to me PBSI may be floundering on policy directions and leadership.

huh?? dun really understand what u are trying to say... but i guess it's not... it's because Indonesia can produce many men single... but why not women single??

I guess thats the main reason.

I really hope that the cahnge that they will make will not harm PBSI, intead.... It will benefit them.... but 170 cm is quite ridiculous I guess.... especially for women... dun you guys think so?? about the IQ... this is very ridiculous.... After mixing and talking to the players, no matter what country they are from, i can see that they have high level of intelkligence, if not, they won't be able to win such matches.... This is my opinion about this.

Test IQ? How? Give the players IQ test? It is totally different when playing badminton. They have to think how to play the next shot in milli-second, not sit down for 30 minutes to answer 30 questions.

I'm glad the 165cm Susi Susanti is 10 years older. Otherwise she won't make the Indonesian team, and we will never have chance to see this legend playing.
