Lydia gains from Julia’s pain KUALA LUMPUR: Pain for shuttler Julia Wong has turned to gain for youngster Lydia Cheah. Yesterday, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) named the 20-year-old Lydia as the replacement for an injured Julia for the world championships, which will be held in Hyderabad from Aug 10-16. Julia qualified on merit for the championships but had to give up her seat after suffering a serious left knee injury in a Sudirman Cup world mixed team championships match against Hong Kong’s Yip Pui Yin in Guangzhou on Monday. She underwent surgery yesterday to mend two torn ligaments and meniscus and will be out of competition for between seven and eight months. Lydia, who missed the cut after dropping out of the top 24 in the world ranking on the April 30 deadline for qualification, will now join Wong Mew Choo in the world championships. The lanky Lydia, however, was sad for Julia that she had to miss the championships because of injury. “I prefer not to be in the championships at the expense of Julia. I hope that she will be back on her feet sooner than expected,” said Lydia. At the same time, Lydia was grateful that the BAM have given her another shot to come good in the championships. “I am fortunate to get this opportunity to feature in the championships for the second time. I was an first round casualty in my debut in Kuala Lumpur (two years ago). Hopefully, I will be able to perform better this time,” she added. Hosts India to field an extra team P Kashyap and Sayali Gokhale duo will feature as wild card entry for the World Badminton Championship to be held in Hyderabad. Being the host nation, India gets the advantage of fielding an extra team for all versions of the game at the event, to be held at Gachibowli stadium from August 10-16. The team will also consist of Arun Vishnu, Aparna Balan, K Tarun and Shruti Kurian, who will get an opportunity to represent India for the singles and the doubles team respectively. According to the format, 64 highest-ranked players qualify to participate in the World Championship and the Indian singles team comprises Chetan Anand, Arvind Bhatt, Saina Nehwal and Aditi Mutatkar. The doubles team has Rupesh Kumar, Sanave Thomas, Akshay Dewalkar and Jishnu Sanyal while the mixed doubles team would present the seasoned pair of V Diju and Jwala Gutta. The other team to make it through the ranking criteria is Arun Vishnu and Aparna Balan. "Being hosts to this premiere event, we get a wild card entry for the tournament hence, performance of the team in this championship will give us a fair idea of the future work required to be done before we approach the CWG 2010," said Prakash Padukone, who is involved in training and selection of the Indian contingent for the World Championships. Finance a concern for WBC but we are optimistic, says Verma New Delhi (PTI): The global economic downturn has hit the preparations of World Championship but Badminton Association of India President V K Verma says he is optimistic of roping in enough sponsors to tide over the financial crisis and make the event a grand success. "Financial resources are a major concern because the projected expenditure for the event is about six crore, including three crore that needs to paid to the Badminton World Federation as the sanction money. As of now we have managed half the money and efforts are on to get the rest," said Verma. "We are doing the marketing, we have prepared the project report of the World Championship and sent it to the various sponsors. But the market is so negative at the moment because of recession, that the response is slow but we hope to raise some more money," he added. Verma, who has been appointed vice-president of the BWF recently, said there would be stringent security arrangements for the event and Australian security experts would be present throughout the event scheduled from August 10 to 16 in Hyderabad. Verma, Vice-President, Badminton World Federation (BWF), said. Speaking at the release of the logo of the championship here on Monday, Mr. Verma said that a high-level delegation of the BWF would inspect the academy before taking a decision in this regard. “Right now, Indonesia and China boast of the top two training centres and we are optimistic that Gopi’s academy will join the group,” he said. Mr. Verma added Hyderabad was the right choice to host the World Championship since the leading shuttlers in men’s and women’s sections — World No. 12 Chetan Anand and World No. 7 Saina Nehwal — hail from the City. “Even in doubles combinations, Hyderabad has given us Jwala Gutta, who along with V. Diju, are World No. 9 in mixed doubles,” he said. Xie Xingfang will not be sent to Hyderabad for the upcoming World Championships, in spite of her world rakning which had provided her an eligible spot for the best event of the year. And that, says Malaysian Koo Kien Keat, shows how open the men’s doubles game has become ahead of the World Championships, which will be held in Hyderabad, India, from Aug 10-16. In fact, only Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong have won two titles in three months. They won the Swiss Open in March and followed it up with the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold last week. The other winners of major Open tournaments this year – in either the Super Series or GP Gold – are Danes Mathias Boe/Carsten Morgensen (Malaysian Open), South Koreans Lee Yong-dae/Shin Baek-cheol (German Open), China’s Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng (All-England), Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah (India Open), Indonesians Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan (Asian Badminton Championships), England’s Anthony Clark/Nathan Robertson (Singapore Open) and Yong-dae/Jung Jae-sung (Indonesian Open). Except for the ABC, the others are all Badminton World Federation (BWF) events. The ABC is the main event for Asians, hosted by Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC). Kien Keat said the fight among the men’s doubles pairs had been so intense that it had become difficult to even predict the winners for the world meet. “The race is so open that it is difficult to say who are the favourites. It’s anyone’s game depending on who strike form during the world meet,” said Kien Keat. “Most of the top pairs are inconsistent. Even Yong-dae/Jae-sung can lose in the second round of a tournament (in Singapore) and then get it right in Indonesia.” The format – the 21-point best-of-five rally scoring game – has indeed narrowed the gap among the players. Kien Keat admitted that preparations in the next one month could make all the difference for the players. And the Malaysian intends to give undivided attention to his game. “This is the most crucial time for all of us. We know what to expect during the world meet. Everyone has a chance. We hope to work on our weak points during training and be ready for the world meet,” said Kien Keat, who won a bronze medal in the men’s doubles with Chan Chong Ming at the 2006 World Championships in Anaheim. But after firing blanks with Boon Heong at the previous world meet in Kuala Lumpur, he is aiming to get it right this time.
Same story as in 2007.. ..i don't recall who the favorite MD pair was going into the 2007 WC in M'sia (maybe badMania recalls), but i recall the INA pair of Kido & Setiawan didn't have a particularly pleasant 1st half of the yr. The draw made the difference, IMO, as they were able to pull through the field and draw the MAS vets, in the Semis, and then the up & coming LYD & JJS in the Finals. This yr, i think the fave pairs should be LYD & JJS and CY & FHF. Good luck to all the pairs!!

Thursday, Jul 09, 2009 Heavy security being put in place Principal Correspondent Around 600 policemen will be on duty Screening of all vehicles will be mandatory HYDERABAD: The organisers of the Yonex-Sunrise BWF World badminton championship to be held at Gachibowli Stadium here next month are working overtime to put in place a foolproof security cover both at the venue and the hotels where the teams will be staying, according to K. Ch. Punnaiah Choudhary, joint-secretary of Badminton Association of India. After a critical review meeting regarding the conduct of the championship on Wednesday, Mr. Choudhary told The Hindu that about 600 policemen will be on duty at the stadium and the hotels. “Closed circuit televisions connected to the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate will be installed and police outposts will be set up at the two important venues to ensure that there is no trouble,” he pointed out. “Only about 40 private security personnel will be deployed at the ticket counters and at the entrance of the venue to coordinate with the Police at the entry and exit points.” “Screening of all vehicles will be mandatory as part of the security measures. Moreover each team vehicle will be provided with armed escort whenever the players or the BWF officials wish to travel during their stay in the City,” the BAI official pointed out. Warm-up courts Mr. Choudhary said that two indoor warm-up courts are being laid adjacent to the main playing area with Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh initially doing the spending, to be reimbursed by the BAI later. All the 30 umpires designated for the job are from foreign countries. “We will have only 150 line judges for the championship,” said Mr. Choudhary. The BAI joint secretary said that so far 36 countries including Indonesia, China and Malaysia, have confirmed their participation. A staggering Rs. 35 lakh is likely to be spent on transport alone during the championship as 80 buses and 20 cars are being hired for the purpose. “We are confident of getting everything ready for the biggest sporting event of an Olympic discipline in India.
