Badminton Photos using Nikon D40

Hello BC members:

I am planning to buy my first DSLR and base from my searches with regards to indoor sports photography, the Canon 40D is a good choice. However, this is over my budget. right now only Nikon D40 is the only model i can afford.

Can anyone pls advise and also please post some pictures also that were taken from a nikon D40 if there are some? Thanks.

D40's autofocus is too slow for badminton. forget about it. you will be wasting your money.

Is the Canon 40D then will be alright for badminton action photos? guess i'll have to save until christmas to get this one.

..this website (if you haven't tried it) and look for used Canon 40Ds, but be cautious of over-priced ones. Right now, in the U.S., a used one, Body only will run abt $600-$800. With lens, abt $750-950..

The 40D is good, not great, for badminton pics. For samples, you may want to hover on over to the 2008 Tournaments->S'pore Open sub-forum/section->S'pore Open Pictures thread..or this recent one:

Also, lens is very important as well.

yeah. 40D will be sufficient. and best that you can get for that price.

and as mentioned, save some money for some good fast prime lens. 50/1.4, 85/1.8.

Worse: if you get a D40, you cant AF on a 50mm 1.8 or any other non-afs lens. The only prime afs you have left is the 50mm 1.4 afs, which apparently focuses slowly.

If you are on a budget, the 50 1.8 (for both Nikon/Canon) is really really nice. They are like 1/3 the price of the other cheap prime lenses.

I have a D90 and a 50mm 1.8, works well for badminton, and can even take decent quality movies of the games.

For amateurs I think the slightly wider lenses are easier, cos we mostly shoot quite close to the court, framing is easier, since the 12mp or whatever can be cropped quite a bit anyway if one does not have too high standards...
