Seems not many ppl from New York, US (even east coast US) are in this Forum. I would like to set a local club somewhere near my neighborhood, and I want to do this survey for so long, your participation is very welcome: If you live in 50 miles within New York City, US (use zip code 11365 as center, since I live close there ^___^ ), please answer the following questions: 1. Where do u live? - Please use zip code, easy to check online 2. Where do u play - Please provide local club/college/high school name (u can put more than 1 answer) 3. What kinda racket u use? - brand, model 4. Where did u get ur racket - shop on line (website, plz)? local store? shop in another nation? 5. How many hrs u usually play for a week? 6. If I set a club about within 10 miles (use zip code 11365 as center), are u willing to participate? Sorry, under progress, contacting different local school gym for now. So, no detail address is available yet. 7. How much u can afford for member fee? - pay by each visit? pay by a yearly member fee? Even though, I don't expect too many ppl to answer the questions, but let me get a try, see how "poplular" badminton is in NY. Thanks, everyone.
hey lazy, sorry, not from NY but MA. Just want to sign in as someone that also plays on the east coast and am looking for people who also play in this region. Good luck.
umm. have you heard about nycbadminton.com - i play in manhattan 3 times a week. i know there are clubs in brooklyn and queens as well. At the manhattan club you can get coaching as well. The rates are pretty stiff though - but they give you shuttles. Also, the people there are auth. yonex resellers. you can get all the yonex racquets, shoes, clothing, bags etc. and members get it a little cheaper than online. the standard in the manhattan club is pretty diverse. some people are very good, others are beginners and lots of people in between. Friday is crowded, Sunday and tuesday is good. the club also meets on wednesdays but that venue is closed right now. If you're interested, just show up - people will explain the fees and everything to you and it's pretty easy to find people to play with.
I heard about NYCBadminton before. However, their schedule kinda conflict with my current club schedule. Therefore, can't really participate in that club. You said u know some clubs in Brooklyn and Queens? Coool... I live in Queens, if u can provide more information on clubs in these 2 places, that will be really really helpful for me. Thnx for all ur information.
Cole's sportscenter at Greenwich Village. It belongs to NYU. Corner of Broadway and East 3rd as I recall. I used to play there for a while every Friday something like 5 years ago when I lived in NY. Isn't that still a possibility?
To klaphat: that Greenwich village place you talked about, can you tell me the direction (by subway preferably) and the fee? At the moment nycbadminton is the only place i know where i can play badmin in New York, but i can't really afford the fee. To Lazzy Buddy, here to answer your survey: -I live in Roosevelt island, zip 10044 -Currently i'm playing about one and a half hour a week at Humanities High School -I'm using a Genji Force Ti1200S, got it from a private seller on ebay -So long that your club is reachable by subway in NYC , with a rate that i can afford, then i'm gonna participate -I'm an international college student, so i can't afford very much really. About $100 yearly member is as much as i can set aside to play badmin. Since there is so few place to play here, i really hope your club goes well.
Trungasa, Here are 3 clubs I currently have access, which could be in "reachable" distance from your home: 1. John Dewey H.S: 9:30am - 3:30pm Sat. zip code: 11223; $100 (student, otherwise $175) per half a year. 4- courts, long term membership request (currently filled up, need to be on the waiting list) 2. Lafayette H.S: 1:30pm - 6:30pm Sat. zip code: 11223; $8/visit (if attend regularly, might qualified for some discount); 4-courts, dropin is ok. 3. Friendly Badminton Club: 7-10pm Wed, 6-10pm Sat. zip code: ??? (close to Queens Center shopping mall). $5 per visit, or $25 per month. 2- courts, but some really good players.
q anybody know what's the cost for NYCbadminton? i think there is a club in greenwich village at Coles Sportscenter for cheap cost but it's only for NYU students, alums and affiliates
and who knows where to buy badminton equipment in NYC? is there a legit badminton supplies specialist/dealership in NYC?
Local dealer: www.nycbadminton.com (authorized dealer for Yonex and Gosen). I don't think they sell equipment through internet, but u can request ur price quote through phone or email. NYCB membership: I believe the drop in is $21 per session. If u purchase membership fee (various depend on terms, i.e. $80 for 6 months), then, the price per session is around $13-14, i think. You can contact Veronica (manager) for detail information. Looking forward to meet you in NYCB, if u r interested.
... well.. this IS manhattan afterall. any type of recreation here is somewhat expensive due to the lack of space. i doubt it's this expensive in the suburbs, or in smaller cities on the east coast. and there doesn't seem to be as much serious badminton players on the east coast comparing to the west. you would think a big city like new york would have tons of badminton clubs and stores to choose from.
Dude, use the damn search function, almost every single question you've written, at a current post count of 12 has been answered before.
It's true that in NYC, with high labor rate and facility cost, it's harder to establish a program. However, there are still quite a few clubs (as I listed above) here and there. If ur schedule is flexible and have a car to drive around, I am sure u can still get way enough action everyday. Of course, cost might be another factor, as the public system (i.e. public schools) seems does not support us as much as on the West coast. Serious players? Well, I can't agree on that issue. Come to NYCB (and of course, other clubs as well), u will be surprised to see how many good players we have. I am talking about ex international player(s), regional champions, local champions, etc. Usually, local school/college clubs's overall standard are not as high as these badminton clubs.
Hi LazyBuddy, After attending the club I just joined at the Lost Battalion in Queens for the second time, I am certain that this place is impossible to play a regular game without interruption. The place is just too crowded. I am looking for another venue to play and I was thinking of registering at NYCBadminton. It is kind of expensive though. Do you have any plan to organize a group thing in Queens? Count me in if you do. I lived in 11374 zipcode and work in Manhattan. Luke
Here are the 3 clubs I currently participate: 1. NYCB: Very wide range of skill lvls, from newbie to local champ. Manager doing a great job of arrange games, so, u get chance to play with all kinda players, and most the games are relatively close in skill lvl. Club open on Tues, Wed, Fri and Sun, 3 differents sites in Manhattan. For detail, check www.nycbadminton.com. 2. John Dewey HS: Zip code 11223 (brooklyn). Recently management change, we got 8 courts on Sat, from 10:30 - 3:30 (open on 9:30 though). Membership is $150 per 3 months (12-14 sessions). Several really good players (local tourny winner), but most are decent club lvl players. 3. Friendly Club: This one is really close to ur club. We play in a church at the corner of Seaburry St. (right next to Queens Blvd) and 54th Ave. Only have 2 courts, and low ceiling. A lot of good players and very freindly. Most time are not very crowded though. Sat: 6-10pm, $5 per visit.
Thanks, LazyBuddy. I might drop by this Saturday at Friendly Club. Can you tell me if they allowed kids to enter. I was thinking of bringing my daughter (age 7) along. As a matter of fact, I was thinking of teaching her how to play.
I think it's ok to bring ur daughter, as long as u make sure she knows to stay off court during other ppl's rally = safety issue. The club runs between 6-10pm, and generally kinda "busy" between 7-9. If you want to teach ur daugter basic strokes, come early or leave late. During "peak time", u might consider use the off court area to hit around (others might also use it as warm up area). Ppl are very friendly over there, but we only have 2 courts.
No problem, buddy. Just look for a "fat" chinese guy, 20s, with a big blue HiQua bag. Usually black shorts and white BF shirt. The entrance is on Seaburry street, really close to 54ave. Pass through a small gate (black), and there's the entrance for the church (usually unlocked). Walk to the 2nd floor, and u will surely hear the screaming and "bang" sounds.
