I'm not really new to the game, but I'm new to trying to get better. I used to play 6 years back because my Dad made me. He used to make me take classes and train. I stopped playing for about 7 years to play other sports, but now I came back. It's been a month now and I've broken 2 racquets by the rim on the bird and 5 strings on 3 different racquets. It's getting to be a little frustrating. I think they said I've been using BG 65...or something along those lines. I've been told it might be because I'm not hitting it properly, but is there a string out there that's more forgiving? Maybe a string that's a lot stronger?
BG-65 is a very hardy string and usually does not break easily unless at high tensions, maybe you should try another stringer. Try NBG-95 at around 23 lbs , I’ve had it for over 5 months (used every week) now and hasn’t broken yet.
The general rule would be to choose a thick string. These will be forgiving , will hold tension well and will be quite durable. The reason of breaking your strings may be due to the fact that you are mis-hitting your shots.
BG65 is one of the most durable string among the strings which offer decent playability. If you have a lot of power, and tend to mis-hit, then string and racket will suffer for sure. My suggestion is to lower the string tension, and get a coach to learn the proper strokes, which should effectively reduce the mis-hit.
As mentioned above, bg65 is very long lasting. I would recommend you warming up with light swings and hitting the bird in the center of the string bed consistently. Lowering tension and not exposing strings/racket to extreme temperatures (ex. in your car in a hot summer day) will make your equipment more durable.
yes, lazybuddy's recommendation for getting a coach is quite sound. it will enhance the string life once you can hit consistently. if possible, try Ashaway flex micro/ BG70Pro. both will last a long time.
Holy crap 5 months! For me BG65 go at 2-3 months MAX EVER, now its BG-66, lasts like....maybe 15 sessions?
OK, I will have to say. I only break my string 1 time in the last 3 year. I usually sell them before the string break...
5 months is good enough I think.. I broke mine in about 1 - 1.5 months. When you broke the string, check if its misshit maybe? also check for any worn out grommet which can be the cause for string break too. Last I guess yeah try different stringer perhaps?
that's the way to go! if you are using Yonex BG65, 70pro, NBG95, and the tension is below 28 lbs, you normally should get 3+ months out of it. of course, mis-hit doesn't count, and condition of racket and string should be good. for most players, including me, it's recommended to cut string after 2-3 month since the feel is different at that point.
The string always loses tension. The rate is at the highest when you first strung the racket, and after 1-2 weeks period, the rate will be much lower.
String Breaking... Wow... you guys strings only last 5 months?!?! My Yonex BG 65 has lasted 2 years!! and it still hasn't broken! ever~! This is completely true and its strung at 22 lbs... I play 4 days a week for at least 1 hour...
Ideally, you should string your rackets every 1-3 months (depending on your playing frequency). The tension would drop quite a bit if you've not strung for 2 years. Worse still, it has already hardened and there is no feel for the shuttle. But of course if you are just playing for recreational purposes, then I suppose it is fine.
i think using "time" to measure string hardiness is really irrelavant. if one person only plays once a week, and another person plays 5 times a week, and they their strings last them both say 5 months, I'd definently say the one that plays 5 times a week has a better string. also, tension and the level and style of play intensity also factor into how long strings last. higher tension, higher breaking ratio; and if you smashes a lot vs if you do more drop/net shots, then style of play also adds into the breaking factor.
The string would last around a year because the moisture content in the string itself will eventually dry out therefore the performance will falling away.
