I heard that INA won't be sending anyone to Colombo for this Asia U-16 due to 'security reasons'... I thought the Tamil Tigers were already exterminated earlier this year... I'm a bit ignorant of any residual rebel movements there...

Right...all the best to the rest of the players.
Its unfortunate that my son is unable to compete in Sri Lanka, i have high hopes from him in the singles event. He was told that BAM have reduced from 8 participation to 6 at the very last minute & he was one of the casualties.
He had won all his selection matches against older boys & righfully deserved to play singles in this Asian Youth. It is truly a negative moment in time for us but i am sure my kid will get over it. Anyway....i am hoping for a Malaysian Asian Youth champ to match Azrin's fantastic results last year.

Sri Lanka's shuttlers in medal winning position

    The Island
    4 August 2009

FLASH-Sri Lanka girls’ team lose to Thailand 2-0 in semis

    by Ravi Nagahawatte

Sri Lanka’s youth shuttlers rewrote the record books in the country’s badminton when the girls qualified for the semi finals of the team event on the second day of the Asian Under 16 Badminton Championships, at the S.Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia indoor gymnasium yesterday.

Badminton officials of the host country stated this was the first occasion where Sri Lanka had reached a semi final stage at an Asian badminton tournament, at any age group, and hence was assured of a medal. All of Sri Lanka medals before this feat in badminton had been won at the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games.

The Chairman of the Badminton Interim Committee Professor Ranjith de Silva told The Island that Sri Lanka was assured of a Bronze medal, even if it lost in the semi finals of the girls’ team event.

At the time of going to press, Sri Lanka was about to start its semi final match against favourites Thailand while Philippines was warming up to play against Malaysia. According to tournament officials, both losing semi finalist in the girls team event are assured of bronze medals.

"This is a historic moment for Sri Lanka badminton. It’s a tough task to play against Thailand, the defending champs, in the semis. But it is an unforgettable moment because Sri Lanka has done extremely well to come this far. Whether we win or lose the girls have done well because the journey this far has put us in a medal winning position," said an elated de Silva.

Sri Lanka beat Hong Kong 2-0 in the quarter finals of the girls’ team event where Achini Ratnasiri and Oshadi Kuruppu beat Hong Kong’s Yuen Sin Ying and Tsang Wing Chiu respectively. One team event comprises two singles and a doubles event, against another country. The doubles event did not come about in the clash between Sri Lanka and Hong Kong because the host team had won two out of three events and qualified for the next stage of the tournament.

In the other quarter finals of the girls’ team event, Philippines beat India 2-1.

"The tournament format really tested our endurance on day one (Monday) because we had to play three games within a single day. That was a good opportunity because all the games gave us the much needed international exposure. Sri Lankans need to play as many matches as possible and this tournament has provided us with that opportunity. I think we might have experienced some fatigue today against Hong Kong today (Tuesday), after all those matches on Monday, but these challenges are part of international badminton," said a contended coach Chintaka Fernando.

Fernando said the players had been well conditioned by fitness trainer Mohotilal Jayatilake, within a short time, and they (Players) had done well to play under hot and humid conditions.

"I believe the turning point for Sri Lanka was beating Philippines on day one. It was a tough game and I wanted the players to win because it eased some of the pressure on us," Fernando said.

Fernando also heaped praise on the boys for living up to expectations. "Lahiru Ambegoda played a brilliant game to beat Singapore’s number 2," said Fernando.

Sri Lanka’s boys’ team bowed out of the team event when they lost to Singapore in the quarter finals. India beat Chinese Taipei in the other quarter finals. In the semi finals of the boys’ team event, which were to begin, India face Hong Kong while Malaysia take on the brunt of Singapore. The finals of the team events in the boys and girls categories will commence at 2pm today.

The Asian Youth Badminton Championships are conducted by the Sri Lanka Badminton Federation in association with the Badminton Asia Confederation. The tournament has attracted entries from 11 countries and the official hotel for the tournament, Mount Lavinia Hotel, houses over 100 officials and players. Badminton giants China and Korea pulled out of the tournament at the last hour.

Haiya, quite dissapointed with Malaysia team as no Gold for Malaysia this time:(

Malaysia suffered a blow in Colombo, Sri Lanka, yesterday, when none of their teams were able to drag home a title in the Under 16 Asian team badminton Championships, held in India.
The medals were shared by Thailand and Hong Kong, who took the boy's title and girl's titles respectively, beating Malaysia each time. China, Korea and Indonesia were not taking part in this competition.

Here are the full results :

Girls team final : Thailand beat Malaysia 2/1

Girl’s singles 1-I.Ratchanok (Thailand) beat Lee Meng Yean (Malaysia) 21-15, 21-7
Girl’s singles 2- Lim Yin Fun (Malaysia) beat Sarita Suwanakijbor (Thailand) 21-14, 15-21, 21-16
Girls’ doubles -I. Ratchanok and P. Maetanee (Thailand) beat Lee Meng Yean and Chow Mei Kwan (Malaysia) 21-17, 21-11

Boys team final : Hong Kong beat Malaysia 2/0

Boy’s singles 1-Lee Chun Hzi (Hong Kong) beat Mundadib Haiqud (Malaysia) 21-7, 22-20
Boy’s singles 2-N.G.K.A Long (Hong Kong) beat Tan Kian Meng (Malaysia)

NO no..this type of junior event should be held in the pan american region or african region. To give them a chance to see the future of badminton players 1st and also to give them a chance to organize badminton tournaments too..;) INstead of holding many tournaments in Asia, We should give others some chance:cool:;)
