Ball Badminton?????

I was speaking to this Indian gentleman who saw me playing the other day and he mentioned that he used to play ball badminton

Puzzled I came home and searched for this game. It seems there is indeed a game called ball badminton played in South India (I AM FROM SOUTH INDIA - though I grew up in north india. I've never seen anyone play it).

seems that you play with badminton rackets and light plastic balls.

what are the rules like?

Maybe it's like using a racquet and pingpong ball. I tried it before, it was fun, but the ball flew out of the house though.

haha... pingpong ball's too light to hit with badminton rackets... they jus end up not coming back :P

Maybe that's how badminton started, and why someone decided to stick feathers in the ball--to slow it down.

, I have heard its payed a lot in rural India and its a fast paced game like badminton played with badminton rackets. Anyone have any extra info???

played with a ball? I don't think a badminton racket could support that kind of pressure when contact with the ball...depending on how big and how heavy the ball is..

There was little details of the game at the site, but assumed the dimension and all else is same except to use ball instead of shuttle? Probably in the rural areas cheaper to use a ball than shuttle, since likely balls do last longer and easier to get/make.

For speed of smash I guess it would depend much on the characteristics of the ball. Using a table tennis ball, the speed would drop significant over the length of the badminton court. A heavier ball will keep speed and smashes will be harder to return. I would also see keeping the ball under control would be an interesting technique. Table tennis balls can do some amazing moves based on the spins and angles it is hit. Net plays would be incredible with extra spin on the ball.

wow... you guys got to know about that...

.. when I was in college, I saw few guys playing ball-badminton. I never tried it... Here, rackets are made of wood and gutted with a much thick string. Ball is kind of made of rubber (I never touched it but the bounce was like rubber material), though soft... They were playing it on outdoor court. Court was bigger and net-height was more... It was pretty fast game to play.... It doesn't seem to be a very popular game here, though I hail from south india.
