We have a player in our club who was progressing very nicely until puberty struck. This player has a pushy parent which likes to blame the coaching staff for not getting the best out of her. She made it into an U13 national development squad but will fail to move upto U15 this year as she and her father fail to take onboard the observations of the club and county coaches. I think this player is under too much pressure to perform and has affectively kicked back by not trying to perform or work in training. Its got to the point where all her confidence and self belief has frittered away, leaving the coaching staff feeling that its a lost cause. Is it time that this player takes a break for a couple of months?
Just motivate them to enjoy the game. Try not to fall into the parents trap where results are everything. Age groups are very tricky due to the awkward phase (emo & physical changes) and besides, physical level between the age groups are never even due to early / lagte bloomers. Success will be measured if your student will continue to be passionate about playing, training, and learning not only about badminton but their own personal limitations & strengths. This way, they should be able to apply these values to the other parts of life and end up being more self confident. Nobody loses.
get them to see a sport psychologist? maybe that can help both the girl and the parent. but yea, too much pressure and push can have negative effect on a kid's motivation. it's all about reverse psychology
Id have a sit down with the parents. Leave the student out of it for now. But talk to the parents and let them know what is happening and how best it would be fixed. The main thing is restoring a positive mindset about badminton in the kidos mind again. As long as she is happy or positive whilst playing she will improve and progress. Negitivity is the brick wall which most people encounter. They either leave the sport or purely hit the wall and cant progress anywhere from there. As shes getting older she has the ability to understand the psychological part of the game more comfortably now. So start working with her on mental attitudes and positive thinking to help her out.
Pressure Well to come a player there will always be alot of pressure, she is lucky to have a good foundation but to be a world player she must have it in her self only if she trully wants it and i able to block out others she will succeed
