UCLA Bruin Open is here once again. Posted is the information regarding the tournament. VENUE: Student Activities Center Gym and Pardee Gym (John Wooden Center). Measures have been taken to minimize glare. Campus map and directions are available at http://www.ucla.edu/map/. Daily parking permits ($10) are available at kiosks located at most campus entrances. Parking lot 4 (entrance from Sunset Blvd.) is the closest to the gym. EVENTS: A, B, C, D flights. Women's Singles, Men's Singles, Women's Doubles, Men's Doubles, Mixed Doubles for all flights. All matches, 3x21 format rally scoring. Consolation matches will be one game of 21. Everyone is guaranteed two games. (ie: Losing your first match puts you in the consolation bracket) Women are allowed to play in Men's events but Men are not allowed to play in Women's events. FEES: $25 for first event, $20 for the second event, and $15 for the third. LATE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Each participant receives one FREE raffle ticket per registered event and also receives a FREE T-shirt for registering in 2 or more events. SHUTTLECOCKS: Two feather shuttlecocks provided per match. Please bring your own additional shuttlecocks. ENTRY: Maximum 3 events. One must play at the level of the higher ranked player (i.e. C/D team must play in C or higher). We reserve the right to make any necessary changes. All entries due September 30. No refunds after September 30. Updates! Entry fees have now been reduced to $20 for the first event, $15 for the second event, and $15 for the third event. Prize money has also been changed for A flights. For all A level double events (men's, women's, and mixed) the winning pair will receive $300 and the runner up will receive $150. For all A singles events (men's and women's) the winner will receive $150 and the runner will receive $75.

is there any update to schedule? ie mens d singles/doubles sat morning, mixed a/b + finals on sunday?
chris, the draws will be posted on tournamentsoftware as soon as they become available. most likely the wednesday before the tournament. as for the scheduling of events, that will be known when we have received all the entries and come up with the draws. it's hard to predict when events will be played without knowing the number of entries for every event.

I played Al and he's a really nice guy, wouldnt call him a sandbagger unless he was going easy on me. There are a few things about the format I would say were unusual. James/Jamie if you're reading this please take this criticism positively, I had an absolutely great time. I just feel there are places you guys can improve. Issues: 1. Players in more than 2 flights. 2. Players with different partners for different events. 3. Inaccurate seed draws (all the c mens single seeds were 1rd ko) From what Ive seen over the last year in tournament format the rules are generally: Players can play max 2 flights, and must play with same partner for that particular event AMD and BMD but not BXD. Players must play at the level of the higher partner. If they enter multiple events you better be ready to play games back to back. One of the bigger problems I saw this year was that on saturday there were A B C and D level matches going on. Im C/D level and Im used to playing saturday morning, and finals on sunday. This is good for a few reasons. - it groups similar matches together so it keeps players waiting time down - it allows C/D level players to watch A/B level matches the next day. - keeps the gym a little less crowded since not everyone has to be there the exact same time. Lastly, if some one does make the semi finals of a higher flight, when entering two flights they should probably be recommended to withdraw from the lower even since it was not fair for them to enter. I cant say they should definitely be removed since it depends on the talent in the different flights, but the tournament directors should be looking at these things. I guess retrospectively looking at the box scores since Al Koh didnt lose even 1 match maybe he shouldn't have been in D's. Thanks to James and Jamie for a great tournament. I look forward to playing again next year.
1.75 cents bit.. - Stopped by briefly on Saturday and there were a lot of people. What time did you guys finish on Saturday? - What are the prizes awarded to the B, C, D levels winners, runner-ups? - I saw the courts, they look a bit small and wondered if they're reg. standard size courts?
