I thought the 50mm lens is not compatible with the D90? Or did I mix it up with D40?

D90 has built AF motor. thus, the 50mm f/1.8D and f/1.4D is able to AF with D90 but not with D40. if you use them with D40, metering is working but not AF.
if you are using D40, you need either AFs 50mm f/1.4 and AFs 35mm f/1.8 for full compatibility.
and now, D7000 able to meter with much older lens such AI lenses. yum... yum....

probably too late to post reply... but this is what i have:
nikon d90
nikon 18-200mm (you'll eventually hate changing out the 18-55 and 55-200 if you do regular photography to take all kinds of picture)
nikon 35mm 1.8 (that's really equivalent to the 50mm on a full frame. Great for potrait and definitely good for food shots)
Rokinon 85mm 1.4 (i got this because i wanted to snap photos in low light and still do it fast... no AF. i used to use this quite a bit, but not much anymore after i got my flash)
nikon sb-800 (got used, good deal, otherwise 600 and up is good)
tokina 11-16mm 2.8 (for wide angle shots)
want to change out 18-200 for 2.8 lenses as i get more used to shots i want to do (more blurring and faster capture in low light)... but above has satisfied me so far (you can take out the Rokinon, not applicable to most people and i got it when i was new... but loved the bokeh on shots i took... itz sooo sweet).
