2009 WHYTE TROPHY: NZ whitewashes Australia in Badminton series . Source: Yahoo Xtra Sport ( http://nz.sports.yahoo.com/news/article/-/6016191/nz-whitewashes-australia-badminton-series ) NZ whitewashes Australia in Badminton series NZPA - September 10, 2009, 8:22 am New Zealand last night completed a clean sweep of badminton's Whyte Trophy trans-Tasman series with a 3-2 win over Australia in Invercargill last night. Southlander's Anna Rankin and James Eunson, both 19, received their first caps for New Zealand and responded with well-taken wins. New Zealand were forced to make a last minute replacement in the mixed doubles and women's doubles, with Donna Haliday out due to illness. The Australian mixed doubles pairing of Ben Walklate and Kate Wilson-Smith proved too experienced for New Zealanders Henry Tam and Danielle Barry, winning 21-19 21-18. Rankin played a steady, controlled game in the women's singles, using all four corners of the court to her advantage to defeat Australian Leisha Cooper 21-15 21-14. In the men's singles, Eunson dictated the pace of the game against 17-year-old Boris Ma, impressing with his speed and power to win with relative ease 21-12 21-16. Barry and Hindley started well in the women's doubles, but Eugenia Tanaka and Kate Wilson-Smith lifted to take the match 12-21 21-16 21-15. With the tie poised at 2-2, rookie Oliver Leydon-Davis partnered seasoned doubles player Henry Tam and overcame a nervous start tp beat Walklate and Glenn Warfe 15-21 23-21 21-18. The tie was the third in the series, with New Zealand winning the previous two and securing the series 3-0. .
