Malaysia state offers honeymoons to halt divorce rate

    Mon Oct 12, 2009 11:56am IST
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters Life!) - Malaysia's eastern state of Terengganu is offering free honeymoons worth up to $440 each to rekindle the romance between married couples on the brink of divorce.

The honeymoon package comes with some counseling and is an attempt to slow soaring divorce rates in the state, according to The Star newspaper reported on Monday.

"We can understand newlyweds having problems understanding one another, where a slight skirmish could lead to a separation but it is unacceptable for those married more than two decades to file for divorce," the paper quoted Terengganu Welfare Community Development and Women Affairs committee chairman, Ashaari Idris, as saying.

The conservative Muslim state did not disclose divorce rates.

Idris said the state had carried out a successful pilot project where 25 couples facing marital woes were selected for three-day honeymoon package that cost around 1,500 ringgit ($440) per couple.

Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country. Under Islam, divorce is allowed, but frowned upon, with the Prophet Mohammed saying divorce was, in the eyes of God, the most distasteful lawful act.

Well, to be fair to X Ball, I did not take him up on the last bet on the WC as I recalled he was going overboard trying to raise the $$ value when much lower value bets have yet to be honoured.

Of course I voted for LD to win the WC title, not LCW, who was uncharacteristically knocked out earlier by the recently married, but defiant Sony. X Ball would have lost again but it was pointless. He argued vehemently that LCW was very well prepared that time and there was no way he could lose to anybody, but I had my doubts, chief of which was the latter's weak mental strength at the crucial moments.

So the crystal ball predicted the wrong result once again and was condemned to ignominy forever.

I just heard from a Msian that he went to Korea supposedly to see his sifu for further training and tips to prepare for the last WC but ended up getting to know a young Korean lady player. I don't know her name but she is reported to be very fair and pretty. The air stewardess episode seems to rate second to this one now.

Wonder anyone heard the same story?
