my bicep hurts [muscle pain] after some backhand drills.. am i doing it correctly? or some of you here also experience that?
Backhands don't even work your bicep, you must be doing something wrong. Unless it was some sort of multishuttle/fast return drill.
Please elaborate on how biceps are a factor in backhands, if anything his triceps would be sore. Unless he is hyperextending his elbow, which would also be incorrect technique.
Supinate your forearm. (turn your palm so it faces up). This is the fundamental forearm motion to perform a backhand stroke. Keep doign it, as explosively as possible. Now look at your bicep. It's moving, is it not?
Yes, and the more you bend your elbow the more your bicep is involved. Perhaps his arm is bent at the elbow too much durring the stroke?
You need to have a good elbow bend to swing comfortably....though depending on the placement of the bird. I think it's probably a bit of over-use and the backhand not in good practise....so either the technique is not down, or he/she was practising too much. We dont' know which sort of backhand stroke was practised though, backhand drives, backhand clears and backhand smashes all have different demands on the arm.
That is true, but you also need to extend comfortably to generate power. He might be might be doing a chicken arm swing or something.
im doing a backhand clear.. i just watch some sort of backhand video tutorial then applies it. [dont remember the link, i downloaded it..]
Seams to me like you are putting too much emphasis on moving your arm and NOT ENOUGH on your wrist. Try mastering the technique by using your wrist only (don't worry about power as that will come!) It's common for people to "swing" their arm which causes the bicep to have to over compensate the movement when pulling it back which can cause a bicep injury.
Correction, your wrist alone will not generate enough power for the backhand clear. No one can, not even Taufik in my opinion. The power must be generated from your shoulders first by bringing your elbow up into position, then your forearm by bringing the wrist up into position and then finally the wrist with a flick. At this point if the pace at which you brought up your elbow and wrist into position in a whip like motion is good, the energy will be transfered into your wrist and thus accelerate the speed of the wrist's flip. Thus one might think that the power is generated at the wrist. It is however your wrist's strength that must over come the inertia that you experience when you hit the shuttle. Having poor wrist strength will mean that you wouldn't be able to over come the inertia enough and thus the speed of your swing will be drastically slowed down during impact and thus a poor transfer of power. The muscles that are used for these movements, are the shoulders, the triceps and the forearms. Never the biceps. So I do agree with some of the comments here, u are using the technique wrongly.
Try wearing a elbow guard. I used to experience pain in my biceps when i smash. After i put on my elbow guard, i don experience any more pain and i can smash all i want.
i'm getting now the technique of backhand by using some wrist flick.. but time to time still feel the stretching of my biceps.. hmmm.. if still i didn't get the proper way then maybe i will not make backhand instead an overhead forehand..
What you're probably doing is straightening your arm fully very quickly on the backhand whip - and biceps HATE to be fuly stretched and the fact that it a sudden and violent movement makes it worse so.
In fact it is a muscle situated beneath the biceps called the Brachialis Muscle. It is used in backhand and it hurts :crying::crying::crying: when not heated up correctly or extended viciously.
