As the title says im just interested to know roughly how many shuttlecocks are made form each goose or duck? anyways ideas and suggestions welcomed Noppy
Depends: - Duck or Goose - Gender - Age - Marital Status - Day Job - Genetics: Whether the parents were full feathered etc.
i was only interested in a rough figure ....like 5-10, 10-20, 20-40 or more. also in reply to the other reply if they have been culled for other reasons using there feathers is only recycling and dont i dont like killing things especially birds Im studying zoology at university and have 130 pet birds

i do know the numbers but that doesnt really matter especially as there is a large range from 1,000-30,000 feathers per bird depending on size etc with geese have around 15-20 thousand and ducks a little less i only know as my A level project was on birds focusing mainly on feathers and flight ability. Anyways that not my point, my point is that a high proportion of the feather cannot be used for a number of reasons. the first one being that a lot of feathers are down, if you tried to make a shuttle using down, you would end up with a feather duster. the second being that a lot of the feather would have a thick enough calamus (quill) so could not be used thirdly a lot of the contour feathers that cover the body are too curved and small. and last of all i dont believe primary flight feathers could be used as the quill's would be too large and also the front/top vane is too thin in comparison. So in conclusion the only feathers that i think could be used would be secondary flight feathers and tail feathers Really Rough calc..... which would only allow for say 20 on each wing and 20 on the tail = 60 in total 60 divided by 16 = 3.75 which must be wrong so perhaps they use the contour feathers on the upper and lower wing but i need to eat and have wrote too much already
let me give you an idea, one goose have 16 feather per wing, that means 32 feather can be made into shuttlecock, one shuttlecock have 16 feather, then means one goose two shuttlecock, but i don't know if some factories make shuttlecock not from the feather of wing. for your reference.
