OK this is a bit about Hong Kong for your amusement If you want to look for Malaysian food in Hong Kong, the best place is not in Hong Kong! In fact, some of the places here puporting to offer Malaysian food are terrible. It's an absolute insult to any Malaysian. Saw one 'Malaysian' restaurant the other week near my place. It offered a curry or Hainan chicken rice. What sort of menu is that??!! The only place that offered half decent M'sian food was in an Arts centre. Err, come to think of it, I think the chef came from S'pore And my most absolute favourite, "cendol" is almost a completely different drink. (sigh). So guys, if you ever visit Hong Kong, visiting a Malaysian restaurant may be one of your disappointments. Anybody know of good M'sian restaurants in HK. I am quite willing to go and check out. Strangely enough, there are quite a few Indonesian restaurants with quite good food quality. Korean restaurants here offer different food to Korea so I'm told. Danish food?......hmm not seen that around. Thai food...............not as hot as in Thailand!!!!
Cheung: Well, at least you don't have to travel much to get good chinese food. Here in Minnesota, USA, I have to travel at least 13 miles to go and have dim sum and 25 mile to a chinese grocery store. There is a Thai food restaurant near by, which I think is pretty authentic. And we have a lot of chinese food buffet here, all you can hork!. But those are americanized chinese food. It is sad to be surrounded by mediocre chinese food restaurants. Ben
No such problem in Vancouver .... Not to rub it in or anything. There is no such problem in Vancouver, BC. Tons of good resturants with cuisine from all over the world. You can even get rattle snake from the Rattle Snake Grill, a number of good Malaysian/Indonesian/Singaporean places around. I think we get quite spoilt sometimes
yeah its great in TO.. lots of selection, but be careful with your selection because it may not be the most authentic... take your pick.
Eww! Snakes?yuck! And my mum is a Hainanese, so she cooks Hainan Chicken rice.....it's delicious. yumm! If you want to try a Malaysian delicacy, try nasi lemak. It's sooo good!!!!That's if the chilli is hot. My mouth is watering juz typing this. lol.
Haha, I just came back from Penang Restaurant in Chinatown, Chicago... good to eat something that tastes remotely like local food (I'm Singaporean btw) although I would say it's not half as good. Having my own apartment is wonderful because I have been cooking almost everyday, to the extent that I am sick of homecooked food! Considering that most people who live overseas complain of dorm food, I'm one lucky gal! Anyway, I agree totally with that thread on bastardized Chinese food. I refuse to eat anything that the Americans refer to as "Chinese stir-fry" coz it's an insult to my culture (no offense to any American reading this, though!) and I always ask for the Chinese menu when I go to (Chinese) restaurants here. Still, the food they serve is always too salty and the portions are just enormous! Guess I'm picky coz I came from a country with a very rich food culture... I have so many favorite Singaporean foods, I can name which one I like best and I have already mapped out a plan of what to eat when I return for Winter break - fried kway teow with cockles at the hawker center near my school - yummy!!!!! I swear I could taste it every night when I first got here. Apart from Singaporean, I love Korean food - but I'm partial to Korea and Koreans anyway. And I love a good steak anytime. Oh, and I love dim sum too. And I will marry anyone who can serve me a bowl of zha jiang mian rght now!
Re: Eww! lol... i take it u've never had snake meat... it's actually quite good! the texture of the meat is really really good n tender! I had some when i was really young, kinda still hav some memories about it. o... btw... people say it tastes lik chichen, but personally, since it was so long ago... cant really remember anymore all i remember was that it was GOOD!!
Cockles!When I first reurned frm Eu many moons ago frst thing I ate was cockles. It was so laden with sewage bacteria that I puked and had diarrohea fr 1 week.
Winter is coming in HK. Snake soup is a popular local delicacy. Found one 'Malaysian' restaurant near my place. The Laksa (s'pore style) not too bad. Bit too much coconut milk. The satay - can't match the taste of the charcoal cooked variety The cendol - yucks. Could only drink half of the cup. Hainan chicken. -The rice was good! and the chicken passable.
Yeah Bbn.... apart from what u mentioned, there was a huge Hepatitis A scare in Singapore several mths ago from eating contaminated seafood. But I still love cockles...
Eew........I hate cockles....remember I used to like them when I was younger, not it's absolutely eew!!!!!! lol. I love laksa anyway...at least the one in the coffeeshop near my house.
Clams my friend. Sea/river creatures with an unusual count of dangerous bacteria in their bodies. Fr Joanne the only decent Laksa in Kl is the one between Jln Petaling and High St.Take LRT to Central market.
Hmm, the next time any of you dropping by Singapore can give Zhao Jianhua's chicken rice restaurant a try. He's one of the shareholders with 2 other Singapore badminton players. Haha, supposedly badminton's the theme of the decor. Forgot the name of the shop, but it's in Thomson. Haven't been there. Will go try it one day. I absolutely hate cockles too by the way. Spare my laksa and char kway teow those!!!

Haha, yupz nasi lemak is my ultimate favourite, together with satay. I used to have nasi lemak EVERYDAY for a while in high school. Hahahahaha... Come to think of it, it wasn't that great, except for the chilli.
