It has again confirmed in the world junior championship that they are going downhill. What can or should they do ? It is time to import the expatriate.
1982 IBF singles ranking Look at the singles rankings in 1982, Li Yong Bo, Tian Bing Yi were already up and coming singles plyers before they converted to doubles after 1984. Maybe too many players want to excel in singles.
Interesting that also Tomas Kihlström and Stefan Karlsson are on this list. They were doubles specialists. I didn't even know that they used to compete internationally in singles... Thanks for the historical perspective, Bbn!
I would rather hope for more disparity amongst the top 30 players (as in nationality) as it can only help the sports. Having China/Malaysia/Indonesia dominate wouldn't help popularize the sports in N. Am., Europe & S. America. It could also be an indication that the rest of the world is finally catching up to the badminton powers.
1982 Ladies Ladies in 1982 also interesting, if one thinks Chinese ladies are dominant in 2002. Wu Di Xi eg, was Swedish Open singles champion in 1981. Thomas Khilstrom was 1979 Europen singles champion (bt Delfs, used to have the tape) and also doubles.
Again, where was Han Ai Ping ? Weren't she & Li Lingwei dominating the 80's ? Also someone like Qing (?) Ping ?
I think Han AP and Qing Ping were a bit later than 1982. Interesting thing about that Men's doubles list. There are a lot of players who did quite well in doubles as well. Nierhoff, Svarrer, Liem SK, Andy Goode, Steve Baddley...
Han Ai Ping started early. In late 70's and in her teens. Sometime during her career, heard she got sick and had to stop for a long period of time - 1 to 2 years. Almost gave up badminton, I heard. Resumed playing probably in 83/84 and was one of the top players. Also one of my favorite player. Checked some info on Han Ai Ping in a HK Invitational '79 - 18 yrs old - lady singles champion in 1978 - imagine singles champion in China at 17. At that age I was learning how to hold the racquet.
UPSET ! UPSET ! The Chinese qualifier Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun upset world #2 pair Jens Eriksen/Martin Lundgaard in China Open. These two pairs are going to Copenhagen Master. Is there still hope or just one time affair ?
