Well, last night, I just messing around at home. TV is on. It's the English language channel and the day's news. (One of the free channels, not Cable which needs a monthly fee). And then, lo and behold, there's a badminton report on TV - in English. It stated Chen Hong won the Danish Open, and Camilla Martin won the ladies singles. Even had a tiny clip of the action. I never seen this before. Only the chinese channel news had TV coverage. Sorry, but this is such a mega-event that I had to share it with you guys.
Is this one of those "public channels"? I mean, the public channels seems don't care too much about commercial related issues. Therefore, they don't have to just show the "world popular" sports only.
Yes, it's a public channel. I don't know why they decide to show badminton now. Maybe because of HK ladies reaching the UC s/final stimulated some TV editors interest.
The name of the topic is just to describe a rare event: Something similar to saying: "the moon is blue" or, "today, elephants flew." "Lightning" was used because of the suddenness of badminton appearing on TV on the public channel.
Definitely might have something to do with that. Professional soccer isn't too popular where I am and we never see any news of it unless it was a big championship or something. That would be the day when we can actually see badminton news on TV here in Boston.
Maybe the one shows u r kicking ass on court and win the champ something. hehehehhe... I will surely tape that for u.
HK news used to feature badminton during sports clips in the 80's. You know then China was winning men's and ladies' games.
This is not US TV or anything but check out this article in the Washington Post dated Nov 4, 2002. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A5174-2002Nov4.html and another one from Australia also dated Nov 4, 2002 http://www.bendbulletin.com/news/story.cfm?story_no=8161 Credit for these links goes to www.badders.com
"For the love of the game", this almost makes me cry when I was reading the article. Now, I know: at least someone knows why I drive 50 miles to practice each time... Badminton rocks!!!!
wow, touching article there. Hopefully more people read that and start something good for the sport. Hey LB, waiting for you to come up and we'll pair up for the Boston Open coming up in March.
