One of my playing partners has just snapped his Achilles tendon. The medics are saying that his leg will be in plaster for 6 weeks then there will be 6 to 12 weeks of physio before he will be able to get back on court.

Have any of you guys got any recommendations on reducing the period of physio and advice on getting back on court.

After being in plaster for 6 weeks, the muscles in the leg will have got smaller. The tendon is also shorter.

Rehabilition is depedent on the actual physical time it takes the muscles to grow back to their former state AND the amount of training that the muscles are subjected to.

Motivation of the individual is a key factor in the speed of rehab. Hence, I suspect the large time frame of between 6-12 weeks. A well motivated individual will need a shorter period.

Rehabilitation on court is another matter. That may take longer. The musculature is unbalanced and unused to full contraction. Your friend needs to be careful but additional small muscle injuries, tears, strains and sprains might occur more easily. That depends on the level of play of the individual.
