Beryno begins quest to break into top seventy

Kota Kinabalu: Beryno Wong left for Amsterdam on Wednesday en route to Norway to begin his one month of competition in the European circuit.

It will be the final round of assaults by Beryno to break into the world top seventy and the results will determine the chances of achieving his target in the BWF singles ranking list at the end of the season.

If he can make it to the top seventy, Beryno has a very good chance of competing in the main draw of the super series next year where the prize money will be much more higher.

The current world number eighty-four told Express Sports that he is most likely to be the only Malaysian player competing in the four championships starting with the Norwegian International from Nov 12-15 followed by the Scottish International Championship Nov 18-22, Yonex Welsh International Nov 26-29 and the Yonex Irish International Championship Dec 2-6.

He said he is looking forward to the challenge ahead and he declared himself fit and free from the knee injury that had plagued him for the last two years.

He still does not know who he will meet in the Norwegian Open this Friday but he is confident of doing well after a month break from international competition.

He was forced to skip the Li-Ning Singapore international series early last month due to fatigue after competing in the Russian Open where he reached the quarter-final stage.

"The cold weather in Norway is the main concern for me as I have never competed in that region before. Therefore I have to be very cautious and not get myself injured as there are three more tournaments ahead, " he said.

He also added that he will be traveling alone as he has limited budget for the one month trip.

It has been a fruitful season so far for the 23-year-old since his return from the knee injury and his ranking dropped out of the top 300 at the beginning of the year.

He made his mark by winning his maiden international title at the Laos International Challenge in July and it is the first time a Sabahan managed to win a singles title in an international championship sanctioned by the BWF.

He started his first comeback match at the Malaysia Open in June and since then he has competed in the main event of six other international championships.

He also reached the quarter-final stage at the Indonesia International Challenge in July and lost to the eventual winner from Indonesia.

At the Sabah Closed Badminton Championship held recently he easily defeated all his opponents to take back the singles title he last won six years ago.

He also won the mixed doubles title in the competition.

Meanwhile, Beryno whose trip is financed by the private sector thanked all his sponsors for supporting him to achieve his dream.

Beryno is not a BJSS (national youth development project) player. He is an independently developed badminton player from yes, the state of Sabah.

He was called to join the National set up in 2005 which obviously means BAM must have to some extent recognized his potential.

However since he did not 'grow up' in the National set up, he did not adjust as well to his new surrounding. So then, He left the National back up squad on his own free will after 2 years.

Dismissed or left the squad is up to everybody's own speculation, but what is certain is he has very much not 'quit the sport' and is trying very hard to 'succeed'.

He is not a special Malaysian for participating in these europe events... he is an independent player with independent sponsors. He even thanked them in that article for their support.

To compare him to a current malaysian junior, i would say he is most similar to 'Zulfadli Zulkifli'. because both are products of 'independent badminton player development'. Zulfadli however has much more support at a younger age.

Can always trust Loh to find an interesting article / subject to discuss and share with BC. ;)

    Sorry. Never meant to.

His ex coach back in Sabah was Tan boon Pin. He acknowledged Beryno's determination. Before joining BAM, he used to train about 30 odd hours a week under this coach. For a non national player, i must say it is a determination.

Again, never meant to be sarcastic on Beryno. I respect him.

naah, it was my bad, (after re-read my earlier post )

Btw, it's always interesting to do a follow up, of the journey of one independent player.

    So, keep them coming.
