After reading this web board, it seems to me that there
are two categories of players, wrist and arm players.
IMO, the correct one should be wrist, is that right ?

IMHO it doesn't exist such thing as an arm player, but more a player with poor tecnique. I think arm is used to overcompensate for a weak wrist or for a wrong way of doing things. Lee Jae Bok talks about a new tecnique for tapping at the net using fingers (finger power), and I think this is great and it is also a great reminder that badminton is all in the hand, the wrist and the forearm. It certainly takes time and training to have a fully functional (for badminton) wrist. For example, I don't think the backhand clear is only a matter of tecnique. Most of it, it's the wrist power. Either you have it , or you don't. But if you don't, you can train and get it, eventually. Arm action is only a way of delaying (or making it impossible) the development of a correct effective tecnique.

dp65: Finger power? That is quite interesting. Were there any details on how a player may strengthen their fingers for this technique?

I agree that badminton primarily requires strong wrist and forearm. Nonetheless, I do believe that the arm is also important. To be an effective player, one must train the entire body. However, all too often I see players who use lots of arm movement rather than wrist for their smashes. The result is a weak, poorly-placed shot which leaves them out of position.

    OT: forearm muscles.

has anyone seen the olympic broadcast? in particular, during the mixed doubles final when China was winning. the camera pointed at Li YongBo (Chinese head coach), he raised his arms and tensed up his forearm muscles, i swear, they are as big as my calves.

LiYong Bo at his time was known to have the hardest

smash in the game.To play against him and Tian Bing Yi

the best way to beat them was to annoy them and upset their

concentration, that's why you see opponents laughing for no

    reason especially at Li.

I agree with Lee Jae Bok. I do not see arm and wrist players. The fingers make the difference.

yep i see all the really good players use wrist/fingers more than anything...where as i use arm speed to generate power..this is a bad technique as it would throw you off balance after a smash and you can tire out easier
