    .
    Greetings,

My question: Is Lin Dan participating in the 2009 China Professional League?

The league is commencing tomorrow, Wednesday December 16. If Lin Dan is participating, I feel so sorry for him.

Just 2 days' ago, on Sunday December 13, Lin Dan was defeated by an unheralded Korean player, Choi Ho-jin, at the East Asian Games held in Hong Kong.

Lin Dan has let known to everyone that currently he is tired, very tired. But it looks like nobody is listening to him; not his sponsors, nor the games organisers, nor his fans.

So, how can we expect him to perform well at this China Professional League?

I dont think LD has a choice as pointed by LYB in this article(in Chinese):

    http://news.ifeng.com/sports/zonghe/200912/1215_4685_1475124.shtml

LYB said that LD has to play regardless of the fatigue building up. This is understandable, this is the first year in which China Badminton League is relaunched. Although it looks good on advertisement(league with most prize money, highest level of play, good return in investment for sponsors etc etc), its operation still suffers alot due to lack of financial support. I think each club needs to pay a registration fee of RMB 2,000,000(IIRC) to play in the league. This does not include the players pay cheque and travel expenses. See below for more(again in Chinese). Most sponsors/industry are holding their money back at this moment as they are still not sure if this is a worthwhile investment amidst the recent economy crisis period.

    http://sports.people.com.cn/GB/22155/22164/10491277.html

Some clubs have to rent out their star players because they don't have enough sponsors. Liao Ning Badminton Club has decided to withdraw from the league and rent their star players like YY and DJ to other richer clubs(possibly qing dao). FYI, BeiJing Club barely made the cut last minute because they manage to get sponsorship last minute from the logging industry.

LD's club(the bayi/81 club) lacks star players, so LD is the trump card for his club to get a handsome sponsorship. So I don't think LD has a choice or couldn't shoulder the responsibility, really...as I don't think the big companies would wanna sponsor his team(or event this ongoing league) if he decides to walk away.

I am not worry about LD not performing at all. The "superdan" nickname is not there for nothing. If you visit the badmintonfreak.com, there are avid fans who suggest that he will win any titles by just turning out in the event/finals. You are worrying too much, chris.

Yes it does(only some of them). There are 14 teams competing in the A league. The lists are just too long(have both men and women players), so I will omit the less "active" players in the international circuit(apology to them).

    Guang Zhou
Men: Wang Zheng Ming, Choong Tan Fook(MAS)
Women: Yu Yang, Xie Xing Fang, Zhang Jie Wen

    BeiJing:
    MEn: Du PengYu
    Women: Wang YiHaN (iirc)

    Qing Dao:
Men: Fu Hai Feng, Zheng Bo, Zhao Wen Long
    Women: Du Jing, Ma Jin

    Ba Yi:
Men: Lin Dan, He Han Bin
Women: Zhao Ting Ting, Pan Pan, Jiang Yan Jiao

(I will retract my comment on BaYi is short of star players, my mistake and apologies)

    Jiang Su:
    Men: Chen Jin, Cai Yun
    Women: Lu Lan

    Zhe Jiang:
Women: Zhang Ya Wen, Wang Lin

    Guang Dong:
    Women: Xia Jing Yun

There's about it I think. Hope didnt miss many.

    I don't think LD has a choice

    .
Thank you for the links majyun.

Some months ago, LYB said that he wasn't keen on the China Professional League for his players. But I couldn't find that link now. LYB said something like with the league, his players would be tired out. But from your links, we find that LYB has changed his mind.

I’m tired, tired, tired, tired. Really, really, really tired

    .
cooler, if Lin Dan was just tired, not very tired, he would not have said it this way:
I’m tired, tired, tired, tired. Really, really, really tired”.

Just received this article from Jakarta Globe.

    December 17, 2009

Beijing. Olympic and world champion Lin “Super” Dan has been ordered to play in this week’s Chinese club qualifiers despite complaining of exhaustion.

I’m tired, tired, tired, tired. Really, really, really tired,” Lin told the China News Service after losing to little-known South Korean Choi Ho-jin on Sunday.

    Maaan...

i can imagine after LD plays in this week's qualifying round for his club, Lin Dan could be saying this:
I’m tired, tired, tired, tired, tired, tired, tired, tired. Really, really, really, really, really, really tired,”

Misbun said Lee Chong Wei would take at least three weeks to recover

    .
    Different problems though;
Lee Chong Wei has injury problem.
    Lin Dan has exhaustion problem.

Last week, Jakarta Globe has this article on LCW's injury problem.

    December 9, 2009

Vientiane, Laos. World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei withdrew from Malaysia’s Southeast Asian Games squad on his coach’s orders because of injury concerns, a report said on Wednesday.

Lee’s absence, a major blow to the team’s hopes at the SEA Games, comes after Malaysia claimed three titles at badminton’s season-ending BWF World Super Series Masters Finals, including Lee’s win in the men’s singles final on Sunday.

“I told him [Lee] to rest upon advice from a private doctor in Kuala Lumpur due to his nagging thigh injury,” Misbun Sidek, the national singles coach, was quoted as saying by Malaysia’s New Straits Times newspaper.

Misbun said Lee would take at least three weeks to recover.

Li Yongbo said that it's a problem with the system

    .
Well, to answer your above comment/quote, Li Yongbo said that Lin Dan must report for duty with Bayi, the club of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in which Lin technically serves as a Major.

“As of the league qualifiers, however tired Lin Dan is, he has to carry on — he can’t skip it because he’s too tired,” Li Yongbo told the Chengdu Business Daily. "Each player has the obligation to play for his local team. It is a problem with the system.”

i didn't say LD shouldn't play in local team, i'm saying why the qualifying rounds? It does show LD has more responsibility and pressure than other 'pros'. He has to play for his country, his county and his sponsors, and his fans.

Li Yongbo showed "little interest" towards the league

    .
    Found the link, majyun.

    ......
Li Yongbo, head coach of the Chinese national badminton team, showed "little interest" towards the club league.

"I hope the club league will go well, but I am not interested in it," Li was quoted by local Oriental Sports Daily as saying.

Li thought the intense schedule would cause huge challenge to shuttlers, especially the top players.

In contrast, Jiangsu provincial badminton team coach Sun Zhi'an applauded the resume of the club league, saying that it would promote the development of the sport.
