England mull Commonwealth Games pull out 'over security fears' Taken from AFP, here's the link -- http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gpZjTWC9UqJ2Xk8nT80i4LcpdNww It would be the first time that England has not competed in the 80-year history of the Games, to be held in New Delhi in October.
I don't think ENG will pull out from the commonwealth Games. Besides unlike the WC, we have a chance of winning something!
I think the Queen would be most disappointed if ENG is not represented at the CWG . I think the Queen would be most disappointed if ENG is not represented at the CWG. .
It is amazing why the games were awarded to India (given its "poor" track record of security) in the first place, if countries were to boycott them later. Perhaps this is another way of keeping their sportsperson intact till Olympics .
Hope that security for our sportspersons at the 2010 CWG will be tight . The security at the 2009 World Badminton Championships held in India was tight. Yes, hope that security for our sportspersons at the 2010 CWG will be as tight as it could be. .

Commonwealth Games: Chief promises problems will be resolved Things are in great shape," said the president of the London-based Commonwealth Games Federation. Transfers in DDA May Affect Commonwealth Games Work Rumu Banerjee , TNN, Apr 1, 2010, 03.11am IST NEW DELHI: Months before the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) was to complete the two Commonwealth Games complexes — Siri Fort and Yamuna Sports Complex — the land agency has transferred key officials of the project. Interestingly, it has also extended the internal deadline that had been set for completion, from March 31 to May 31 now. While top DDA officials claimed the move was administrative, sources in the agency said the transfers couldn’t have come at a worse time. ‘‘The projects are at a critical state, and any new official who takes charge will need some time to understand the issues,’’ said a senior official. It’s especially critical for the Siri Fort Sports Complex, which will be hosting the Asia Badminton Championship in April. Sources said while the FOP (field of play) and playing courts have been completed at the squash and badminton stadium, a large part of the work still remains to be completed. This was supposed to have been finished by this month-end. ---------------------------- *Read completely thorugh The Times of India.com -- http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...A-may-affect-CWG-work/articleshow/5749012.cms
Delhi Games opening ceremony to be ‘better than Beijing’ “The opening ceremony, the way it has been planned, it’ll be the best ever,” T.S. Darbari, joint director general of the New Delhi Games’ organising committee, told Australia’s AAP news agency. “Better than Melbourne, better than any Commonwealth Games, better than Beijing – it’s a guarantee.” “It’s going to be tight but it will happen,” said Darbari, who also shrugged off costs that have ballooned to about US$2bil – nearly twice Melbourne’s 2006 Games. “So what. It happens everywhere,” he said. http://thestar.com.my/sports/story.asp?file=/2010/4/21/sports/6096276&sec=sports
The security at the 2010 Badminton Asia Championships, while good, was more extreme than Airports. It can give rise to issues with backpackers. 3 major security checkpoints + 3 to 5 ticket checkpoints. Not to mention ticket purchase was done in the extreme heat a good 1 km away. No coins, notebook PCs, cameras, tripods, umbrellas, water, pens etc were admitted and only press can bring their equipment in. That the mobile phone and wallets were still allowed (after scanning) was a relief.
IMHO, to be troubled with the extreme security at checkpoints is worth it . IMHO, it's better feeling relief while watching the matches. To be troubled with the extreme security at checkpoints is worth it. .
I don't think that Indians can come up with a ceremony better than beijing, hopefully it will be good, though. And I can't think of England withdrawing, No offense, but it will prove that English sports governors are so stupid / rude or dumb prouds. CWG is something that England should be the first to participate in as its something like their own.
Games baton to arrive on Friday The ceremonial reception of the Queen’s Baton in Malaysia will take place at the Queen’s Baton Relay in Malacca on Saturday as the state will host the 13th Malaysian Games (Sukma) which starts tomorrow,” the Indian High Commission said in a statement, here yesterday. http://thestar.com.my/sports/story.asp?file=/2010/6/9/sports/6429772&sec=sports
Badminton: Indians set to be a threat to M'sia at C'wealth Games “We used to dominate the singles event and with our players making a 1-2 sweep in the individual event. But now we have to be wary of the growing threat from India,” he said. “(Lee) Chong Wei will be the favourite. But the other Malaysians will find the going tough based on their current form and we have to seriously look into this.” On Hafiz’s injury, Rashid said: “He complained of pain in the right knee during training but he was doing fine after getting some treatment. “It’s unfortunate that he has been hit by injuries again. “We will now have to evaluate his participation in the Singapore and Indonesia Opens later this month. We will pull him out if the injury is serious.” http://thestar.com.my/sports/story.asp?file=/2010/6/12/sports/6457700&sec=sports
Badminton, TT venues for Commonwealth Games gets nod STAFF WRITER 18:43 HRS IST New Delhi, June 16 (PTI) After months of delay, venues for badminton and table tennis for the Commonwealth Games have finally got the green signal from Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC). The fate of the badminton and squash courts and table tennis arena at Siri Fort Sports Complex and Yamuna Sports Complex respectively was lying in limbo for last several months in the absence of requisite nod after the DDA failed to comply with norms. "The revised proposal (regarding stadium for badminton and squash competition at Sri Fort) was found acceptable with the observation that no trees should be cut," a member of the Commission said. For YSC venue, the DUAC has asked the project proponent to define the pedestrian movement for spectators as well ensuring a pedestrian plaza at the spectator entry. *source : http://www.ptinews.com/news/720577_Badminton--TT-venues-for-Commonwealth-Games-gets-nod
Commonwealth Games organisers miss another key deadline “It would have been nice to have had access to the venues earlier and we made no secret of that,” said Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive Mike Hooper. “But the basic requirement of venue construction needed by June 30 has now been achieved. Maybe just a week more is needed.” Hooper has endured a rocky relationship with the Indian hosts, who last October demanded he be sacked, but he welcomed recent progress after years of delays and setbacks. “We are pretty impressed with the work done over the last few months,” he said. “We gave brickbats when they were deserved, so perhaps it is time to give a bouquet.” We have everything under control,” she said. “The rains in Delhi are not as heavy as in other parts of the country. There is no need to panic.” – AFP http://thestar.com.my/sports/story.asp?file=/2010/7/1/sports/6581310&sec=sports
Commonwealth Games: Security not a threat in New Delhi "Athletes should just concentrate on their training and leave issues of security to us because if there was any security issue, Wisma Putra would advise us," he said. "Thus far we have not received any advise or warning from New Delhi for the Commonwealth Games (on Oct 3-14). "However, we will monitor the situation in New Delhi, especially issues of security, through the Malaysian High Commission there but so far everything is fine," he said yesterday. The security alarm was raised following reports that the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF), a Sikh separatist group, may cause problems during the Games. Abdul Halil said two National Sports Council (NSC) officers are in New Delhi to attend a seminar on safety during the Games and to gather latest information of the situation there. Meanwhile, chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, Suresh Kalmadi when commenting on the latest security issue related to KLF said: "All is well in New Delhi." "Security is a critical component for the success of the Games. The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India and the Delhi Police will ensure that the Games are held in a safe and secure environment, not only at all the competition and non-competition venues, but throughout the length and breadth of the city of Delhi," he said on the official Commonwealth Games website, yesterday. http://www.nst.com.my/nst/articles/50secc/Article
