Hope this will be fun for everyone.

Based on what you have come accross or come up with... share how simple sentences / words / etc can have it's meanings distorted.

    Keep it clean guys ;)

    I'll start with some:-

    1) This Honestly / Dis-honestly
e.g.: (during a sales pitch perhaps) I'm telling you this honestly....
    Alternative : I'm telling you dis-honestly

    2) Rational / Rashional (Rash) / RATional (Rat)
= The boy's Rashional decision to jump of the train resulted in a 3 week stay in the hospital
= The mole in our company was hard to discover as he is very RATional in concealing his identity.

    *feel free to comment. :D

    raise, raze, rise

to raise is to elevate; to raze is the reverse: 'to destroy completely, to level with the earth', so the well-known phrase the house was razed to the ground is tautological. Raise is also creeping in to mean 'rear children', but most British parents still seem to prefer to raise sheep and bring up a family. you also raise your head but rise in the morning and rise from your bed. in British English, a pay rise is the equivalent of the American raise.

    rain, reign, rein

rain we all know about; to reign is to rule or exercise supreme authority, and a reign (the noun) is a period during which a particular monarch rules: The reign of George III was a turbulent one. to rein in is to check or control, and a rein (the noun) is the strap that controls and guides a horse or other animal. rein is also used in two opposite senses: to keep a tight rein (restrain) and to give free rein (allow freedom): The constant rain of criticism did nothing to stop Henry VIII giving full rein to his appetites throughout his entire reign.

Most dangerous Color for a Gang

I asked if Gangs were somehow color coded, which colored gang would be considered the most dangerous. The following answers qualified for the word smithing topic:-

    1) Green, Because the Green Gang called themselves GangGreen (Gangrene)

    2) British chap said Red. Because the Bicycle path in London was made in RED Colored Gravel. (CyclePath= Psychopath) Apparently from an English Pub joke.

something from a Dilbert book & various sources

    Leading Edge / Bleeding Edge

e.g. (Leading Edge) : It was the leading edge of automotive convenience and safety

e.g. (Bleeding Edge) : As with most bleeding-edge Japanese fashion, the designs won't come cheap

    born, borne, bourne

born is used exclusively in relation to birth: She was born on jan 1; he was born of an English mother and an Indian father. borne can be used similarly (the mother had borne the baby over the full term) but has wider applications: the pain he had borne was beyond belief; these facts should be borne in mind. bourne is an old english word for stream that survives in countless place-names such as Littlebourne, Bishopsbourne, etc.

I recently found out how bad Analysis & Anology can sound.

A decent enough but distorted definition of Analysis : The art of pulling numbers out of an.... (From a Dilbert book, naturally directed at office humour)

    Brother From Another Mother

Was watching a show when one of the contestant expressed that another contestant was like 'a Brotha from anotha Motha'

I felt it was a nice way to express camaraderie.

To my surprise, someone else in the room expressed great dissaproval. He said 'How can he (the contestant') be so 'rude' about his own father.

    proffer, offer

what little distinction there was or is between the two is exceedingly fine, but proffer is more formal and implies offering or tendering in expectation of acceptance: the amount proffered by the management was calculated to make the men think twice about calling another strike.

    rapt, wrapped, rapped

rapt means 'engrossed and absorbed' (the children listened with rapt attention to the storyteller); wrapped means 'enveloped, enfolded, blanketed': the trappers were well wrapped against the bitter cold. rapped describes the act of striking something sharply (the caller rapped several times on the door) and also the fast, rhythmic monologue delivered over a music track: eminem rapped non-stop until well after midnight.
