Pain in the Back of the heel

I've been having this pain at the back of the heel for quite sometime and it doesnt go away. The part which is pain is bone which contacts the soccer ball when doing a backheel pass hahaha! Yeah after my badminton games it feels really bruised down there and when i rubbed it its very painful. After resting for a feel days the pain still remains there. However sometimes when i bend my foot the heel feels pain as well so I'm not sure if the pain comes from the bone or maybe the tendon or muscles behind the heel bone. Does anyone experience this problem too? MY coach says I should use softer shoes, but does it even help?I'm not sure if shoes cause the problem.

    Possible causes:
    1) Achilles tendon strain
    2) Chaffing/friction from loose, or ill fitting shoe.

Let an orthotist, physio or doctor look at your foot and shoe. They can give you specific advice. Don't ignore this. Last thing you want is ruptured Achilles tendon.

Oh shucks this sounds so serious =(. I just have to go to any doctor and tell them about my foot? Would a traditional chinese physician help?

Might not be serious at all.:) I just mentioned worst case scenario.
It could be something as simple as your heel slipping in your shoe, or a little fold of fabric in the back on the shoe.

See any type of doctor/physio/trainer, or even a shoe salesman.
If you a have a traditional chinese doctor, I'm sure he/she is quite qualified to figure this out.

I had the same problem a few years ago. I had a big patch of bruising on my skin (covering heel ball). This became so bad (because I didn't rest it) that the bruised skin cracked and I started to bleed from there. I rested it for a month and bought some better cushioned shoes (Asics Gel Rockets). After that the problem never came back. I found that this happened because my previous badminton shoes did not have sufficient cushioning at the heel area.

Yes very serious. Yeah shoes are one of the causes. Hopefully the new shoes will help.

Try wearing an ankle support/brace, it really works.

Wouldnt the brace just tighten the area around the ankle? How would it help the heel?

Ankle support/braces won't do anything for the heel. They normally add no compression to the heel. In regards to compression support for the heel, that doesn’t really work. For heel you need cushioning to reduce the impact.

i do encounter the pain u described. it all started when i changed to a new pair of shoe in Oct'09. the very next morning, i cant walk as the pain is unbearable. it still hurts now but not as intense as when i 1st had it. even now, it hurt like hell when someone accidentally knock onto the back heel. i hv rested since then. went for x-ray, but cant see any sign of hairline crack on the bone (my initial suspect).

i hv now changed to another pair of shoe, so far so good as the pain is not as intense as before. also i have changed the way i play, more relaxing + slower pacing. dont dare to play agressively as i afraid the pain will come back or teh condition gets worse.

i also know a colleague of mine who totally hang up his racquet as he had the same situation as TS and me.

I've had the exact same symptoms as you. After a tournament, my heel felt painful. I rested it for 3 weeks, but after playing for an hour, the pain came back again. I went to a doctor, had it x-rayed, and it wasn't broken. The doctor told me that the area around the heel is probably inflamed, and would take a very long time to recover (since you can't just stop walking for a week or two), unless I get cortisone shots. I've talked to another player I know that had cortisone shots in his heel, and he said the pain went away almost immediately, and he was playing again in a matter of days. Go to a podiatrist or physiotherapist, and see if you can get cortisone shots to stop the inflammation, and therefore your pain.

Once I get the shots myself, I will let you know how it worked for me.
