I must confess that I rely way to heavily on my fitness when playing singles. I feel I should focus more on my shot making abilities than just pure fittness. I can think of countless games where my opponent was a better "all round" badminton player than myself, but my fittness level was to0 high for him to keep up.

The danger that I will soon be facing is this: right now, I am winning games at my current skill level more on fittness than shot making; I will be moving up another tier soon and most of the people in that tier have a fittness level comparable to my own.

Has anyone else faced this challenge? Should I start focusing more drills to improve the quality of my shots?

    Thanks,

    Justin

At our club our main player are all single specialist ... one of the player who has better foot work always beat the player with better fitness .. they don't move unessary step

moving toward the net one of the single player tell me that there is 3 way .. depend on what siuation and you pick the right footwork.

so i think talking to some coach on footwork ....

Thanks, I am trying to improve my footwork but it's so damn hard. Almost all the footwork videos suck at showing the exact way, and describing how to do it properly; plus, I see pro's have different footwork from each other which only adds to the confusion.

    thanks

Just find the one that works best for you, you don't need to be the best at footwork, you just need to be good and it needs to be instinct so that you can concentrate on other things like shot making.

well.. footwork is still the key .. without it .. you cannot make the right shot in single...
i can do a really good cross court fast drop but .... if i am not at the right spot it always fail.....

so in the end footwork is the key .. and video can't really help

because in different situation you use different footwork if there is a slow drop shot you do the cross leg move to the net if there is a fast drop you want to do a quick chases move to the net .. and more and more :) i am still trying to learn all this .... but the key is doing it more than you play game that's the only way to improve...

What I'm saying is that while footwork is very important, you don't need to be the best at it out of everyone out there. You just need to be good (that being relative of course). As long as you have good enough footwork that you can get around the court quickly, efficiently and without tripping yourself and it becomes instinctual you don't need to be at the level of a world pro.

Everything is a balance and all aspects of your game must be at the same level in order for you to compete well. If anyone of the aspects of your game are lower than the others then you put yourself at a disadvantage. Basically, don't over train so much in one area that the others get neglected. Most beginners concentrate on the shot (usually a big smash) and ignore footwork. I'm just saying to be careful that you don't concentrate on footwork so much that your other skills fall behind.

Timing and shot selection are just as important... yes footwork will get you there in order to make your shot but if you don't know which shot to make or suck at making the shot then you're still going to lose the point.

by the sound of it seems like you're playing very defensively by exhausting your player out. I could be wrong but if so then you should try some def/off mix playing

Yeah, I guess I play defensively. Most people I play against can't keep up with me fittness, so it makes sense for me to play in that way. I could be wrong!?

    Thanks,
