Hi, JR.. I hope you get to answer my thread although i know that you have many online forums to attend to.

JR, since you are an international badminton player, I would like to ask you the following:

    1) when and where do you start from being a player until you become an international player?

    2) what personality or spirit that you must have in order to play badminton?

    3) does money and good equipments is the main concern when you were first not yet given any sponsors?

    4) how do you get sponsors when in your career?

    5) i am only 17 and still schooling. I would like to become an international player one day. JR, please tell me how and where can I start to be a known player?

    6) is it worth it to become an international badminton player? how much salary do you get when you became an international player?

    7) lastly, do you have any plans before you join and take badminton more seriously as your lifetime career?

    Just a thought.....

Are you a former/current BAM Youth Player? If you aren't, chances are remote that you'll suceed because 17 years old is considered old in starting to get coached and play competetive badminton......

You're still schooling? So are you a school player then? If you can't even break into the school team or if you've just started playing recently, then it's impossible.....

Normally in Singapore, people start relatively young (7-10) in playing the game if you're serious about playing competetive badminton.

I mean, there're Under 12, Under 14, Under 17 tournaments held in Singapore and winning these tournaments does not even guarantee that you'll become a known player let alone breaking into the senior national squad.

For example, Kendrick Lee has won the Under 14 and Under 17 Singles Championship 2 times EACH (total of 4 times). But he is still a relative unknown outside of Singapore. And he has only just started to break into the international scene. I've to remind you that being the Singles Champion 4 times in a row in your country is not an easy task you know! Refer to the Pilot Pen website.

Anyway, sponsership usually comes when you're more famous (by winning tournaments etc.). You must have credentials to prove that you're a quality player before you get sponsers.

Unless u r a very competitive player already, personally, I consider 17 is a very late age to really get started.

The truth is, in badminton dominated forces, ppl start quiet early. Many elite players are already state/providence or even national champ when they are 17. Unless u already own a respectful rank in ur nation, otherwise, it's kinda difficult.

Plus, u came from Malaysia, which means extra difficulties to just "shine" in ur own nation first.

Well, I may not know as much as Jonas does, but I certainly have an idea of playing badminton competitively as well as seeing it from a point of view of a fan as well as a badminton administrator. Here are answers to some of your questions:

    1) when and where do you start from being a player until you become an international player?
    * try to start playing at an early age (ie. 8-10 yrs)
    * go to a local club...usually they will recommend talented people for further training

    2) what personality or spirit that you must have in order to play badminton?
    * good personality comes into play sometimes, but too much may get people into trouble
    * should always have high spirit especially when going through hard times

    3) does money and good equipments is the main concern when you were first not yet given any sponsors?
    * money never comes to one's doorstep straight away (eg. talent leads to training commitment leads to success leads to recognition leads to sponsorship leads to money)

    4) how do you get sponsors when in your career?
    * as above...one requests for sponsors, but sponsors usually only come when one has achieved something successful

    5) i am only 17 and still schooling. I would like to become an international player one day. JR, please tell me how and where can I start to be a known player?
    * you will have to work extremely hard if you're only learning now (as modious commented earlier)

    6) is it worth it to become an international badminton player? how much salary do you get when you became an international player?
    * it's worth it if you enjoy the tough physical & mental training
    * i don't think there is salary...it's more like what 'prizemoney' you earn, as well as any sponsorship earnings one may get

    7) lastly, do you have any plans before you join and take badminton more seriously as your lifetime career?
    * i don't know how to answer this question

    Good luck angelus_2012!

    1st Question

    Hi Angelus!!

Perfect! It´s easier and less time demanding for me to answer one question at a time.

I started playing in a club when I was 9 years.

The thing about me is that I´ve always played with my childhood friends over a fence in a schoolyard very near my parents house. I´ve always loved to play any kind of ballgame: soccer, handball, tennis and badminton etc.

    Re: Re: being an international?

Not really. Jonas can still tell us the salary range that Professional players make without specifically telling us how much he makes.

He can also tell us information such as how much companies usually are willing to give out to sponsor the best players in Denmark, whether all travelling and acommodation expense are covered when travelling to oversea tournaments, what percentage of prize money that they win in tournament is required to give back to the Danish Badminton Association, etc. These information wouldn't contain too much personal issue.
