    Showmanship? I don't know...
But he's the only pro badminton player that I know that sits and lies down on the job!

I can think of two reasons...

Lying back would basically move his racquet back a foot or so, to give him more time to react. Furthermore, he was sitting roughly at the service line; a smash may be too high for him to hit.

possibly possibly...but lying down seems so hard to swing that arm to clear the shuttle back...but who am i, being a meer mortal, to say it's hard to do that!

but it's definitely cool showmanship, as you can see he repositioned after two returns to make himself comfortable as he lie down for the expected third smash...pretty to watch!

he could have quickly spring up from his butt to his feet...

he actually spread himself out fully on his back...if it was me, i would only be inviting some hits to the gonads or the stomach!!!!!!!!!!

This is what you call anticipation...
The 3rd time his body is literally on the floor is because of his 2nd return shot. If ever his opponent smash it back to him on the 3rd shot.. the angle is steeper.. therefore KKK lie down on the floor for the anticipation of the 3rd smash by the opponent.

he left foot slipped from underneath him when he was trying to reach the shuttle
KKK is such a great player though
LYD and JJS has done similar things when playing MD

Hmmm... also another possiblity could be that whenever you end up on the floor you tend to get it wet with sweat and slippery, that would be why they use that mop thing afterwards, he might have slipped and hurt himself if he sprung back up quickly.
The other seems more likely, just offering an alternative :)

Don't ask about knowing about getting floors wet either, long story and I didn't win the point :D

After watching it again, it is clear to me that he actually repositioned himself to lie down, and facing his racket upward in ANTICIPATION of the third smash...but i am trying to imagine how lying down would allow for a return of a steeper smash....

hopefully you didn't slipped and fall, and if you did, hopefully you managed to return the shot back! tat would be slick!

he's done that "sitting duck" pose a few times already (it seems he does it in every single match)..search & check out a clip of the 2008 BWF SS Master Finals video against LYD & JJS on youtube..

He's definitely done it a few times. It is an extreme crouch defence.

Once you're down and the shots are coming fast and furious (as I can attest to from ice hockey goaltending) it's dangerous to try to get up, because you just can't react while you do so.

(I'm sending KKK my hotwater bill: After my boys saw the SS Final last year, they insisted on flopping down on the grass every time we played outdoor baddy)

no one think he does this on purpose to get a time out by having the floor mobbed?
