A friend of mine will be working in Kuala Lumpur until August, or longer. I am looking for some tips for him, basically anything: interesting areas, good places for local cuisine, best street food, good clubs, food markets, fleamarkets, or anything "off the beaten track". He has travelled extensively in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but this is his first proper encounter with Asia. Too bad for him he's not at all interested in badminton... but he'll be my racquet courier, that's for sure!

    All tips welcomed!

Too numerous to mention but regarding off the beaten track, I would advise to

confine himself to " safe" areas ie. European friendly areas.

    Some places of interets;

    1) KL Bird Park (World's largest)

    2) Various Museums (Refer to Star paper under Metro".

    3) Food places-too numerous , dirt cheap, but make sure everything is thoroughly

cooked and piping hot.Better to keep within hotels and shopping complexes for

    better quality control.

    4) Pubs in Bangsar ( like those in Bali).

    5) Genting Highlands

Thanks, but a guy who has entered Iraq illegally through the desert is unlikely to enjoy hotel restaurants and shopping malls... I'm talking about an explorer, not a tourist!

    ;)

In that case he'll need to travel out of Kuala Lumpur

as the capital is highly urbanised.

Msia is renowed for it's wildlife reserves and nature parks

especially in East malaysia and beautiful natural islands and beaches

like Tioman,Sipadan,Redang etc.One can do fishing with just a hook, bait and a line.

And also rehabilated old settlements .

I was thinking that since we have some local KL members here, you could perhaps share a few "secrets" of the city, such as places that one would normally not find in guide books etc. But I guess that's easier said than done! Thanks anyway, Bbn!

    :)

as you can see, this don't seem to be your average multi-camera carrying tourist that stay in multi-star hotel.

our friend here is more adventurous, ya?

since he may have a nack of sneaking in to places, he can go to putra jaya and try to sneak into the Prime Ministers admin area, or maybe try the sultan's residence (kings palace). if any in KL, cannot remember.

or if thats stilll all a bore to him, then cross over to east m'sia by BOAT. lots of pirates to keep him occupied :)

It's quite difficult for people outside Asia to understand

    Kuala Lumpurunless one's been there.

It is basically a commercial and industiial hub , a place to make money.

Every piece of real estate is maximised and there is little space left

for cultural amenities.it's like Bangkok or Chicago, esp traffic jams.

Most places of interest lie outside KL.

Not like eg. in Australia with designated zones for commerce, residence etc.

Yeah....to tell you the truth, I don't know of any places inside KL, though I always go there, lol. I'll say go and explore OUTSIDE KL. :) Or goto Malacca. :D

    Mag,

I suggest your friend to try out the King of fruits.

Of course I am talking about Durian.

Somebody told me Durian Chendol is good in Malacca but that's quite far away form KL.

Bukit Bintang for hawker food as a start.

If he's really adventurous, he can drive in a car around KL but be prepared for jams.

Thanks, he arrived this week, is just getting into the new work routines. KL exploration will commence this weekend. ;) I'm eagerly awaiting a report!

As to Durian, I've actually eaten that! Sometimes you can find it here in specialist shops. Weird fruit.
