in the preparation phase of a smash, so when you are slide on and arm up and racket back, do you have the palm of your non racket hand facing the net, the side or facing you? i use to play with my palm facing the net and now i play with it facing me and i've had a huge increase in power and accuracy. is this the right tachnique or does it not matter too much? looking at most slow motion videos of pros they are seem to do it too.
I personally have my hand perpendicular to the net but that's the way I feel comfortable. so not necessarily the right technique but it feels comfortable and natural to me so why change it.
If you look at the pros when they smash, they have their non-racket hand facing up at the ceiling or sideways towards the racket side. This is because it allows the most relaxed and natural position for the non-racket shoulder/elbow/forearm.
Believe it yourself, not me. Badminton smash compilation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKC1Depuf6Q Many examples for you to examine in slow motion.
We talked about this before. I asked if we should "hold the vase" and I think the answer is that we do. Why? I don;'t know either. But I feel comfortable with my palm facing the sky as if when I smash I can use my nonracket hand to unwind my body (my nonracket palm that is facing the sky will pronate as well)
and none of them (ok, maybe one) had the palm facing directly upwards. Mor like the fingers were upwards than the palm.
That's why I mentioned facing up or sideways to the racket hand in my post above. Whatever feels most neutral and relaxed to you will work. However, if you look carefully, after the completion of the smash, the non-racket arm ends up tucked against the body with the palm, you guessed it, facing up.
the OP: now you're talking about something completely different though. and I still don't see it in that movie. having your palm properly facing up, means your wrist has to be fully supinated. That is not a natural/neutral position. maybe I'm not understanding something here
