I'm mostly a doubles players (mixed or doubles) and once in a while play singles. I'm looking into buying a light racket (4U) to help me maneuver around when playing doubles; i'm stuck with an old 2U racket as my old ones have kinda "died" on me. The choices I was thinking of are: Apacs Lethal Light Apacs Tantrum Light (haven't seen much reviews on this one...) Panda Power Trinity 2 (of course specifying 4U) Any advice/suggestions is much appreciated. Thanks!
Don't go too light or you'll lack power when playing from the back court. For doubles, I prefer 85-87g, balance point around 285-290mm. Of course, the PPT2 would fit those specs perfectly... and I have 3 of them already! The T2 is already very maneuverable so no need to get 4U.
Thanks for the advice! Question though, although having too light of a racket may affect power, what if I just string it at a higher tension?
There have been mega threads on string tension, but the short answer is you'll be in for a surprise if you play with an Apacs Tantrum Light at 28 lbs. In short, higher tension is better for accuracy at the expense of power.
i own Apacs Lethal Light 1.10 and it works fine, everything as i expected from an Apacs light weight racket. Lost of power is unavoidable (unless the racket is XXX stiff), but you will gain movement and speed. So its a trade off that only you can answer
May be you can consider SOTX Super Light or Karakal Mtec, both offer light weight racket... Normally for a light weight racket, you will gain more speed and maneuverability but sure you need to sacrifice some power for the weight... Higher tension means you need more power to hit the shuttlecock to reach farer but you get better control... Basically light weight racket would not recommend to string it on high tension...
