Interesting comment from another Indian coach, and what he refers to as the "Indian brand" of badminton: ---- Vimal Kumar, a former national champion who coached Gopichand at Padukone's academy, said: "It is a victory for the Indian brand of badminton. "Our game revolves around deception, varying pace and domination at the net. Prakash did not have a good smash but Gopichand has it." ----- while deception is used in current men's single, it is different (more extreme) to say that ones game is revolves around it. net domination has became much more crucial today than ever. perhaps that's the reason why Gopichand did so well? how does Hendrawan compare with Gopichand at the net?
Seems to me Indian style similar to European esp. Denmark.Heavy emphasis on wristwork and innovation. In recent years even Europeans may have abandoned it for the more result oriented speed and power of current 'factory manufactured" players from China.Doubt if it is going to last with the new scoring system.Come back Zhao, Yang Y, all is forgiven.
with all respect to the champion, but IMHO, novelty probably has something to do with Gopichand's success. previously, Gopichand wasn't even in the coaches radar screen, the true test will come after they analysed his game and forms appropriate strategy against him. perhaps the real test will be either Japan Open or the World Championships?
Deception, it is easier said than done. It is a nice skill set to have but alone it isn't better than speed or power. My opinion is that Gopichand got a temporary edge over his competitors because his new style of play while all other players were trained and focused to the beat the usual key players of denmark-china-indonesia circle. Gopichand is a relatively unknown player, seeded 13(i think) going into 2000 all england, other coaches and players haven't seen or studied his moves/deception, so everyone was unprepared. I'm not saying gopichand was lucky or not deserving winning 2000 all england men singles, but his use of deception play strategy going into this year all england threw everyone off. With the chinese, danish, indonesian, malaysian, and korean coaches will be studying gopichand's brand of play, i'm sure the "regular" star players will be more prepared for gopichand the next time they meet. Gopichand definitely had enhanced the game of badminton, to watch as well as learning his moves.
Maybe Gopichand peaked too soon. He has been around for a while so it isn't as if he is exactly new. Xia beat him in the German Open final last year?? or the yr before?? in two sets. Like a lot of other things in life, styles of play come and go.
Re: OT The Indian brand of badminton. Gopi has been around long time.He beat many in 2000 Thomas Cup for eg. This is the first time he has beaten all in a stretch.Maybe he has a wider repertoire of skills to call on than others just like Sun Jun, Yang Yang, Zhao, Morten or Rudy Hartono.Even they were beaten regularly but they caught on real fast. See Star-online sports section on what Gopi has to say about his success.
Re: OT The Indian brand of badminton. It may be possible that all the players he met before think they can sweep him under the carpet again, having beaten him before!! In other words, all his opponents could have been over confident!!
Journey to the West Hi master Tang, I' m Bruce Lee, remember me?I'm now working as physical instructor for Jade emperor. I heard your disciples monkey, pigsy and sandy were blitzed by an Indian whirlwind called Gopi-cha or something whilst on your way to the West to collect the badminton Sutras.Maybe I can help. In my youth( I sound like grandpa and could have been one if I had lived)I was beaten by karate, tae kwan do and judo experts but I learnt from them and absorbed them into my own form called Jeet Kun Do.I doubt it is very popular now as it is so complicated, youngsters now only want to learn simple stereotyped things.I heard there's one smart little guy called Jacky who gets himself drunk, falls sick or changes his sex before he fights his Shaolin opponents. There's even a fat guy who catches his opponents by surprise because he looks slow. Maybe you could learn from them and upgrade your disciples' skills.Bye. ( THIS IS SAID IN JEST)
donot compare gopichand with the great players such like prakash and hendrawan.... he does so with only one aim after him no one should win any medal for india..crook..he is...winning once all england championship by luck..he is revenging BAI on the cost of indian players..disgusting..
remember gopichand has become the champion once..but once has made him big head forever.. he has been troubled by the same association when he was a player..so today he can trouble the players better than the association... so indian bad-minton..individual game is also under control by a few... it is unfair to do this kind of thing... we wont give up fight....we are fighting for our right... be with us...
dear mtk2: let me tell you why so..? i am sure you know who are the indian national champions..and you must be also knowing who are the highest ranked players inthe world... if gopi and co initiate badminton association not to forward their entries for qualifying in olympics for the country? what to do term gopi and co? perverted? malicious? criminals ? or sadists? pls go thru all recent new payer cuttings..you will know why we reacted to this kind of criminal attitudes towards the players... hope u know why now?
F-MAN: THANKS FOR UR SUPPORT..WE WILL WIN THE BATTLE... THESE SADISTS OF OUR COUNTRY SHOULD BE BURRIED WITHOUT ANY MERCY..
