GEORGE TOWN: Malaysian badminton has lost another of its illustrious shuttlers with the passing away of former Thomas Cupper Law Teik Hock.

Teik Hock, who played a sterling role in helping Malaya become the inaugural champions of the prestigious Thomas Cup in 1949, died of old age on Tuesday. He was 89.

He left behind his wife Khoo Cheng Poh and a son, Beng Yeow.

Beng Yeow said the cortege will leave their residence at No. 38, Kim Bian Aik Road in Penang at 2pm today for the Batu Gantong crematorium.

Teik Hock played alongside other Malayan badminton greats like Wong Peng Soon, Ong Poh Lim, Chan Kon Leong, Yeoh Teik Chye, Teoh Seng Khoon and his namesake in Ooi Teik Hock back in the 40s and 50s. He is best remembered as the player who inspired Malaya to Thomas Cup victory 61 years ago.

His stunning 15-5, 15-0 win over Jorn Skaarup at first singles sparked his team-mates into overdrive as they overran Denmark 8-1 to lift the coveted Cup.

(But he lost in the reverse singles to Mogens Felsby 11-15, 1-15.

Apparently Wong Peng Soon who was supposed to play 1st singles was sick on that day. How the then unknown Malayan team overcame their long sea trip to England for their first TC to shock their Western counterparts was an amazing story and it should be read by all badminton loving fans.)
