What an opening Day for this yr's U.S. Open..dang, that was a very long day.. - It's the first time ever in the history of U.S. Open to have the most participants. It felt like it's already the main draw.. - A lot of young players..as well as veterans.. - Livescore wasn't working on the 1st Day..Thus no updates of Livescore @ Tournamentsoftware.com - Saw 3 people setting up 2 cameras and a control booth. My guess is they will start live webstream starting tomorrow (Day 1/Round 1) just like they did during the Canada Open. However, i don't know which server website they will use.. - Met our smash_master; see his pics in the U.S. Open Photo thread - I would say, this yr's edition is worth watching and attending as the Qualification Day has already been quite competitive.. - Zhu Lin showed up briefly, taking her ID picture and hit back and forth with another player for a few minutes.. - Saw Tai Tzu Ying taking her ID picture..then disappeared as if she can't wait to go to Disneyland (yes, it's very close to OCBC).. As for the matches: - A few notable & exciting matches: The WS match involving Cee Ketpure vs. Sabrina Jacquet..the longest match of the day..what a battle between the two of them.. Day 2 - 1st Round quickie recap.. ..some comments for Round 1 (Day 2)...saw a few exciting matches: - The match between Lee Hock Lai vs. Rajiv Ouseph went the distance, 3 games. In the 1st game, Hock Lai tried a lot of net shots, forcing Rajiv to use his net skill. Hock Lai got the advantage. In the 2nd game, Hock Lai seemed to yield to Rajiv in order for him to save energy. Rajiv also changed a bit of his strategy by sending Hock Lai to the back more. In the 3rd game, it was neck to neck. In the end, the more powerful and experienced Ouseph prevailed. Rajiv reminds me a bit like Hafiz Hashim, slow, lumbering type player. - The match between Sattawat Pongnairat vs. Lind Thomsen also proved to be quite exciting. It was neck to neck but the more expressive Lind Thomsen squeaked out at the end. IMO, Sattawat, should've won. But once again, he was on the verge of winning leading by 2 pts & on match pt but just couldn't close the deal, by making a couple of costly shot selections. However, Lind Thomsen's gas tank ran out in his very late night match vs. the young Derek Wong. - Brice leverdez played well enough to survive a near scare, esp. in his 2nd match of the day. The thriller vs. the young Hiroyuki Saeki. It was a close affair throughout, each player taking turns leading but then the other player would tie the score. But it was the more experienced Leverdez who held the nerves at the end as Saeki booming smash went wide to end the match. Saeki himself played well, very quick and aware with his defensive dives ala LCW/LD. - Zhu Lin ended Anna Rice's attempt at her back to back U.S. Open title. Zhu Lin still moving a bit slow but was still able to cover the court. - I heard there are 37 CHN Taipei players who came to this U.S. Open/North America trip. Essentially the entire national team..they will travel and compete in the upcoming Macau Open and then another tournament following that.. - Another very interesting XD match was between Prutsch & Zirnwald vs. the CHN Taipei pair. It was a ding dong affair until very late in the match. Zirnwald played very well to cover Prutsch. - The WD match between Grace Peng & Johanna L. vs. one of last yr's WD champions turned out to be very entertaining. At the end, the error-prone Melody Liang gave the U.S. pair the victory by committing another error to seal the match. It seemed to be 1 vs. 2 out there as Jiang XL was basically covering a lot of ground.. - Lee Sheng Mu & Fang CM are awesome. Very fast and strong at the point of attack. - Dicky Palyama just ran out of steam in his 2nd match. - I'm impressed with the S'pore MD pairing of Hendri S. & Chayut T. I especially am impressed with the well built Chayut, esp. for his size to move around the court. Very strong player and quite consistent. - Kim Dong Moon was in da house....yes, that Kim Dong Moon (pictures will be posted later).. - I was told Halim H. is being groomed with Eva Lee in preparation possibly for the 2012 Olympics..They lost a close match vs. the young KOR pair..

Day 3 - Second Round quick recap.. Day 3 - Second Round quick recap.. ..several interesting matches; 2 of them, arguably, became the best matches of the day, imo..i'll just recap a few of them: - Phillip Chew & Halim Haryanto vs. Alvin Lau & Jon Vandervet - This match turned out to be in favor of the local favorites as they turned a slow start in the first game and changed strategy in the 2nd game. Today's QF showdown between Halim & Phillip vs. the KOR's top pair will be a monumental challenge. Good luck to both Halim & Phillip. - Tai Tzu Ying vs. Kristina Ludikova - Both players were on equal par throughout the 1st game, with a difference of a mere pt. for most of the 1st game. However, Tai TZ was able to garner enough poise to secure a tight 1st game. - Shizuka Uchida vs. Nicole Grether - Nicole controlled most of the 1st game (even led 18-11 at one point), but Shizuka was able to claw her way back (rallied with 7 straight pts) to seize control at the end of the 1st game. In game 2, it was Shizuka who led for most of the way and almost closed the deal, but it was Nicole's turn to claw back. Unfortunately her rally fell short. - Jacob Chemnitz & Julie Houmann vs. Toby Ng & Grace Bo Gao - Tough loss for the CAN pair. They almost and should've won the 2nd game after having the match pt, but lady luck wasn't on the CAN pair last night. Toby was quite upset after the match, as heard by a bottle being shoved (thrown or kicked) into the players seating area.. - Kazuteru Kozai vs. Lin Yu Hsien - The longest match of the day/night. At the end, the CHN TPE's player's series of errors in the 3rd game doomed him. - Michael Fuchs & Birgit Overzier vs. Shin Baek Cheol Shin & Yoo Hyun Young - The experienced GER pair won but not before the KOR pair forced a rubber game and even got Mr. Fuchs up in arms with a close line call in the 2nd game. Shin Baek Cheol is really solid. The future looks good for the KOR MD department. - Nicole Grether & Charmaine Reid vs. Joo Hyun Lee & Yun (Grace) Peng - It was a duel of arguably the 2 most veteran WD pairs in this tournament. The local WD pair failed to advance to the QF Rd. but they sure gave their adoring crowd something to cheer about when they forced the rubber game. - Ki Jung Kim & Baek Cheol Shin vs. Rudi Gunawan & Hock Lai Lee - This was arguably the most entertaining match of the day/game, imo; what else is new when it involves Rudy Gunawan. Truly a well worth watched match (pictures in the "Photo" to show how intense it was)Too bad as it wasn't being broadcasted live; if not mistaken the live webstream ended and entire crew bailed ship before this match started. Anyway, don't be fooled by the scoreboard and straight games scores, but the U.S. pair actually was on the verge of forcing a rubber game. It all occurred in the 2nd game, after a couple of spectacular occasions which included some insane diving retrievals by Lee Hock Lai, leaving the veteran Rudy Gunawan on an island all by himself to fend off all the attacks. Those plays, esp. the first one which included several dives, seemed to re-energize the pair. And in both occasions, despite being being under major attack, the U.S. pair was able to get the point at the end. The crowd sure loved their effort and gave their rousing support after the match ended. The match (2nd game) was also a bit marred by a bad call, near the end of the 2nd game, from one of the senior linejudges. Everyone in the stand saw the shuttle landed in (by several inches), but the linejudge called it out. The linejudge was probably a bit nervous and might've lost track of the shuttle. There sure were a few boo-birds after that call. - Chou Tien Chen & Lin Yu Jui vs. Hendri Kurniawan Saputra & Chayut Triyachart - This was arguably the 2nd most entertaining match. Not in terms of "fun and the oohs and ahhs" but in terms of it being a total nerve-wrecking game. The young CHN TPE pair played very well. For the CHN TPE side, i'm impressed by the young Chou TC. He seems like a very clever player. The reaction by the young CHN TPE says it all (pictures in the photo thread). - Zhu Lin and lady Pi HY are cruising along and are looking to set up a big QF Final showdown.. - Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork looking very sharp so far; allowing single digit pts in 3 out of their 4 games.. A couple more notes from Day 2 (First Round): - Next yr's U.S. Open is scheduled to go before the Canada Open (also based on BWF calendar).
Day 4 - Quarterfinal Round recap..XD Day 4 - QF Rd. recap..only caught a few glimpses here & there of the matches.. XD Robert MATEUSIAK & Nadiezda ZIEBA vs. Derrick NG & Xuelian JIANG - Playing with a different XD partner, this yr, Jiang XL, tried her best to put her side into contention early as they lead early on. But the no.1 seed Polish pair sure came ready to play as they slowly but surely grabbed control of the match halfway through the 1st game. After that point, it was essentially cruise control all the way for the Poles. Hung Ling CHEN & Wen Hsing CHENG vs. Nathan ROBERTSON & Jenny WALLWORK - If you guys saw the match live on bet35.com site, i'm sure you'll notice it was Nathan who did all the dirty work to cover Wallwork (not to put down Jenny as she also had glimpses of brilliance), as the CHN TPE Harry Potter (Chen HL) and his partner worked together to put the Brits often in awkward position. Sheng Mu LEE & Yu Chin CHIEN vs. Hendri Kurniawan SAPUTRA & Yuyan Vanessa NEO - The S'pore pair can only muster to secure the 1st game as the CHN TPE pair struggled to find their rhythm. The tempo changed starting in the 2nd game as Lee & Chien found their game and reeled off 6 consecutive pts and eventually tired out the S'pore pair from then on. Michael FUCHS & Birgit OVERZIER vs. Jacob CHEMNITZ& Julie HOUMANN - Arguably the 2nd most exciting match of the night. Playing with a different partner this yr around (last yr with our smashie54), Jacob showed a better match temperament and really controlled the tempo. Overall, it was a fairly even match, as both pairs made their own shares of great plays as well as errors, until late in the 3rd game when the score was tied @ 20 a piece. That was when the more poised GER pair sneaked through to win a very well contested match. I'd say the Polish pair and the kwun-look-alike fella and his partner to meet in the Final..
Day 4 recap continues.. WS Lin ZHU vs. Hongyan PI - The 2 ex-CHN players met again. But with almost the same exact score as their encounter last week @ the Canada Open, the match was pretty much decided halfway through the 1st game. Lady Pi's movement & reaction really slowed down after that point on. Shizuka UCHIDA vs. Tzu Ying TAI - Before i start, i just want to say so sorry to our limsy. In the 1st game, i don't know if Ms. Tai was tired or still had Disneyland on the back of her mind but she made more errors than expected and her reactions seemed to be slow. In the 2nd game, i thought she would make a comback as she made her move and was more on the initiative but it wasn't enough as the more stable Uchida staved off Tai's comeback attempt. But as a consolation, at least Tai probably has more time to go sightseeing to other places. Maybe even go shopping. Judith MEULENDIJKS vs. Hsiao Ma PAI - The more experienced and consistent Judith prevailed. Pai just seemed to run out of gas in the 2nd game. Juliane SCHENK vs. Mingtian FU - Juliane took charge early on as she moved Fu around the four corners as Fu could only react. It was the same in the 2nd game as the match ended as the fastest match of the day. I'm picking Juliane and Uchida to meet in the Final..
Day 4 recap continues.. MS Rajiv OUSEPH vs. Wan Ho SHON - Rajiv raced so fast out of the gate in the 1st game and led by as many as 12 pts (18-6) toward the end of the 1st game. Shon regained his composure & tried to force a rubber game but Rajiv's length helped him secure the 2nd game. Yuichi IKEDA vs. Stanislav PUKHOV - With the help of the hometown Japanese supporters, Ikeda was able to get on track and took the lead from Pukhov late in the 1st game. And with an even more boisterous support from another local BCer, kakinami, who did his usual custom cheering, Ikeda stormed and finished the match with ease. Ikeda's win sets up a very enticing & ear busting Semifinal match vs. Leverdez and we should hear all the "Allez! Brice, Allez" vs. "Ganbarre! Nippon!" loud chants!...*bring your earphones if you're going to watch it live.. Brice LEVERDEZ vs. Yu Hsing HSIEH - Allez, Brice, Allez! That cheer, although smaller in vibration compared to the Ganbarre! Nippon! chants, continued to echo the hall of OCBC as Brice continues his brilliant run the last couple of weeks. And he doesn't seem to tire off one bit. Brice played the corner shots really well, really extending the court coverage and sending Hsieh far & wide to all corners of the court. Add in a few errors by Hsieh in the 2nd game and it was good morning, good afternoon and good night. I'd say, win or lose in this tourney, France's top rep in MS for the WC next month in August is looking oh so magnifique. Ziliang Derek WONG vs. Kazuteru KOZAI - From what i saw briefly of the match, Derek really was at least 1 step ahead of Kazuteru the whole time as the Japanese seemed to not get much support from our kakinami... I'd say Leverdez and Ouseph to meet in the Final..

WD Rie ETO & Yu WAKITA vs. Grace Bo GAO & Joycelyn KO - It was no contest for the petite JPN pair vs. the similarly built CAN pair as the JPN pair's experience pulled them through. Wen Hsing CHENG & Yu Chin CHIEN vs. Britta ANDERSEN & Julie HOUMANN - Houmann and Andersen did their best by forcing the rubber game. But eventually all the effort to force the rubber game took a toll on their stamina as they lost control of the 3rd game. On the other hand the more consistent CHN TPE pair continues to seek their 2nd U.S. Open title to their collection (last win was in 2004) and kept all hope for the CHN TPE pair to bring back 3 titles (and even more money) just like last week. Sandra MARINELLO & Birgit OVERZIER vs. Nicole GRETHER & Charmaine REID - Sandra and Birgit played with more efficiency and less errors as they secured a quick finish. Shinta Mulia SARI & Lei YAO vs. Hsin Yun CHANG & Hsiao Ma PAI - The CHN TPE pair gave their all but came out w/ a different result in comparison to their WD compatriots. This time, the younger CHN TPE pair were the ones who lost steam in the 3rd game. I'd say S'pore pair and CHN TPE pair to meet in the Final..
Day 4 recap continues.. MD Ki Jung KIM & Baek Cheol SHIN vs. Phillip CHEW & Halim Haryanto HO - The U.S. pair gave their best shot vs. KOR's top pair. The 2nd game turned out to be very entertaining as Halim and Phillip kept the game close enough. Kim Ki Jung seemed to be the weakest in the pair as he also made some errors in their R16 match vs. another U.S. pair. Halim and Phillip literally had game pt in the 2nd game, however, a couple of miscommunications ended any hope of forcing a rubber game as the KOR pair reeled off 3 straight pts to secure the match. The Semifinal match between the KORs and CHN TPE's top pair is cooking up to be the most entertaining match. Chieh Min FANG & Sheng Mu LEE vs. Michael FUCHS & Peter KAESBAUER - It was a pretty comprehensive and decisive match right from the get go. Fang & Lee seemed to be clicking on all cylinders heading into next month's Worlds in France. Hung Ling CHEN & Yu Lang LIN vs. Andrew ELLIS & Chris LANGRIDGE - The match that could've ended in 2 games, for the CHN TPE pair, turned out to be the longest match and toughest one for the CHN TPE pair. What caused the ENG pair to seal the 1st game was a questionable call after a serve from the ENG pair, whereby Chen HL though the serve was illegal/a fault and the game had ended. But the umpire called it otherwise, despite Chen HL's plead to overturn the call and the ENG pair took advantage of that situation by playing well enough to win the 1st game behind Ellis' aggressive play. However, in the 2nd game, CHN TPE regrouped and led all the way for the decisive 3rd game. It was pretty close in the first half of the 3rd game, but a change in the serve tactic, by sending a few long serves to Langridge as well as a few errors by Ellis, seemed to throw off ENG's game and end their comeback attempt. In a way, the tactic was to put Langridge at the back (as he seemed to be less comfortable in the back than Ellis). Howard BACH & Tony GUNAWAN vs. Tien Chen CHOU & Yu Jui LIN - It was no contest between the 2 veterans and their younger counterparts. *Video clip at the point where the scores were tied in the 1st game should be available soon. I'd say Fang & Lee and Bach & Gunawan to meet for the 3rd time in as many meetings and the U.S. pair will try one more time to finally get a win..

Day 5 - Semifinals Day recap.. Day 5 - Semifinals Day recap.. ..i'm going to consolidate all the matches recap into one post..my brain is nearly fried from watching way too much baddy and doing all baddy-related stuff the entire week....i hope kwun comes down here next yr to help out with the photo taking task!.. overall, the Semifinals Day was filled with so many exciting matches, probably all of them were worth watching.. XD Sheng Mu LEE & Yu Chin CHIEN vs. Robert MATEUSIAK & Nadiezda ZIEBA - The CHN TPE kept the pressure on the Polish pair throughout the entire match. Lee SM was alert and quick at the forecourt. The Polish pair was able to catch and tie the CHN TPE pair late in the 1st game, but they just didn't have the closing power. The Poles stayed close in the 2nd game, but the CHN TPE pair increased the gap further after interval pt. I thought the Poles didn't try the correct strategy by attacking Chien YC. Perhaps they tried but Chien YC was too strong. Zieba was able to hold her own, even made a couple of brilliant plays at the net. Michael FUCHS & Birgit OVERZIER vs. Hung Ling CHEN & Wen Hsing CHENG - This was a fairly even contested match. I thought the CHN TPE pair made more unforced errors, esp. coming from Cheng WH, throughout the game and seemed to be lacking coordination which gave pts and opportunities for the GER pair. The GER pair was more assertive, better in their shuttle placements and more alert. At the end, despite forcing a rubber game, the CHN TPE pair just seemed not able to shake off their error-filled game. The GER pair, on the other hand, took full advantage and romped all the way in the final game. WS Lin ZHU vs. Juliane SCHENK - Definitely one of the best matches of the day, if not the hardest fought match. First game was filled with awe-inspiring shots as Zhu Lin struggled out of the gate. Eventhough Zhu Lin caught up, her slow start allowed Juliane to play her game and find the winning shot in the 1st game with a wonderful net shot. The 2nd game saw a much more rejuvenated Zhu Lin as she found her range and started to extend her shots and pulled Juliane closer to the net, while slowly but surely tired out the German player. The 3rd game was as close as the other 2 games but this time with a much fresher Zhu Lin, she was able increase the gap even more. Judith MEULENDIJKS vs. Shizuka UCHIDA - It was no contest as the stronger, taller, lengthier Judith really stretched the much shorter, less stronger Shizuka. Add in her backhand prowess ala Taufik (well, almost), Judith was able to pin Shizuka for most of the match at the back, esp. at the backhand side, and kept the petite Japanese player running all over the court to chase the shuttle. With the relatively easy 2 games win, i can see her giving Zhu Lin a bit of a problem, perhaps winning the WS title. MS Rajiv OUSEPH vs. Ziliang Derek WONG - Derek actually had a sizeable lead in the 1st game. But Rajiv found his rhythm after the interval and slowly caught up and finally took the lead after the interval pt. Derek recovered in the 2nd game and cruised all the way to force the rubber game. It was in the rubber game where Rajiv put to use his experience as well as length to finally secure a Final appearance. Brice LEVERDEZ vs. Yuichi IKEDA - In arguably the most exciting and loudest match of the day, it was the more poised and calm Leverdez who came out on top. Yuichi definitely came out sharper in the 1st game as Brice tried to get use to the Japanese player's playing style. In the 2nd game, however, with a bit more patience on his part, Brice finally found his rhythm and finally found his game to force the rubber game. In the final game, it was definitely a match worth watching. With the the tenseness being felt by both players' supporter, Brice and Yuichi tested each other's nerves and staying power. It was a cat-and-mouse game until late in the 2nd half of the 3rd game where Brice finally asserted himself and Yuichi making a few errors. At the end, after a few breath-taking plays which brought the crowd to their feet, Brice made a clever long serve which Yuichi eventually smashed into the net. At which time, all of Brice's supporters got up and cheered on the great performance (by both players). Brice, otoh, fell to the floor and laid for several seconds before getting up to greet Yuichi. *video clip of that last few moments is available at the video thread.. WD Rie ETO & Yu WAKITA vs. Shinta Mulia SARI & Lei YAO - The JPN pair, well known for their defensive prowess and fighting spirit, really played well and with less errors. After winning the 1st game, the S'pore pair for some reason lost their focus and started making errors after the interval pt. of the 2nd game. It was downhill from there as they couldn't recover their game, even going into the final game. Overall, Shinta seemed to be making a bit more errors and afterwards, coach Eng Hian had to give a bit of "lecturing" to his 2 charges. *video clip of that post-game "lecture" by Eng Hian is available at the video thread.. Wen Hsing CHENG vs. Yu Chin CHIEN vs. Sandra MARINELLO & Birgit OVERZIER - It was a lopsided affair as the CHN TPE looks focused to grab their 2nd U.S. Open title since 2004. MD Chieh Min FANG & Sheng Mu LEE vs. Ki Jung KIM & Baek Cheol SHIN - The scoreline doesn't tell the true picture but it turned out to be a pretty competitive match. The KOR youngsters definitely could match the CHN TPE's pair speed and quickness. It was so close yet so far for the young KOR pair. After winning the 1st game with ease, and finding themselves trying to find their game in a while, the CHN TPE pair fought hard to level the score at 1 a piece. The KORs, on the other hand, found themselves under duress and squandering their lead late in the 2nd game. As pressure mounted, and add in their errors late in the 3rd game, the CHN TPE pair took advantage and didn't let go of the opportunity to clinch another Final Rd. appearance and a chance to win their fourth consecutive title as well as making their wallet even fatter. One thing i noticed abt the CHN TPE's pair is that all of their strokes are short. There are hardly any arm or shoulder movements. Like they say "It's all in the wrist, baby!".. Hung Ling CHEN & Yu Lang LIN vs. Howard BACH & Tony GUNAWAN - In arguably the most exciting match of the day and last hope for a U.S. representative in the Finals Rd., the U.S. Open defending champions finally had to relinquich their title in a very hard and very competitive affair. If the first game or even the 2nd game showed any indication on how age has finally crept into Tony G. (and maybe Howard), then it surely did as both Tony and Howard had to finally fight for their Finals Rd. hope in both games. The U.S. pair had a chance to win the 2nd game, after playing catch up and evening up the score at 20 a piece behind a very loud and supportive home crowd. But it was the younger, more fresh CHN TPE who were the ones more poised. At the end after a tough 2nd game loss, it wasn't meant to be for Tony & Howard, as the CHN TPE pair strolled all the way to the Final to set up an all-Chinese Taipei MD Final. It was also the end of the U.S. reign of winning the U.S. Open MD title in the last couple of yrs. ..and for those wondering, here are my lazy Finals picks: Fang & Lee to win the MD title.. Cheng and Chien to grab their 2nd U.S. Open WD title.. Lee SM and Chien YC to grab the XD title.. A fresher Judith! to win over Zhu Lin who might be out of gas.. ..and last but not least, "Allez, Brice, Allez!"..the Frenchman to win the MS title and redeem himself after last week's Runners-up finish.. *Side note: The U.S. will possibly have Halim and Eva Lee qualifying for the XD category spot in the 2012 OG. While the new age-less Tony and Howard will focus together to qualify in the MD category. They will also have Paula O'Banana partnering with Eva Lee for a spot in the WD category.
