Terms used when we talk about Badminton Techniques and Training (Strokes/Shots)

Greetings,

I was reading and replying in this thread, found located at:

Terminology used can vary in different countries and/or used by different coaches.
Let me state some which I use in my coaching session (from Melbourne, Australia).

But before we talk about strokes and shots, we also need to have a clearer terminology on these 2 items.

For me, I use this terminology, namely;
* Stroke = How a player executes a shot. It relates to our stroke production. It describes our body action.
* Shot = How the shuttlecock travels. It describes the trajectory of the path taken by the shuttlecock.

Now, we need to name 3 areas of the court, namely;
* Fore Court = The area between the service line and the net
* Back Tram Lines = The area between the last 2 lines at the back of the court
* Mid Court = The area between the Fore Court and the Back Tram Lines

OK, now we shall talk about the name of the various shots (again to remind our readers that this is only my terminology).
* Dropshot = An overhead shot played to land in my opponent's Fore Court
* Netplay = A shot played at about net height (at my Fore Court) to land in my opponent Fore Court
* Clear = An overhead shot played/hit high to land in my opponent's Back Tram Lines
* Lift = An underarm shot played/hit high to land in my opponent's Back Tram Lines

The intention of this thread to talk about the terminology used in different countries and/or used by different coaches.

Let us start by identifying the different terms used. And we shall start with this simple one, although some may not know it is a special term used;

* Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally.

Hope that our various BCers can continue to add in more terms, commonly used in our own special corners of the world.

Now we shall add in the second term; the Clear.

* Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent
* Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally.

We shall add in the third term; the Lift.

* Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke
* Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent
* Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally.

So, I gather that a Dribble is a soft controlled shot played from Fore Court to Fore Court.

The Tumble is a netplay that makes the shuttlecock somersaults once or more times over the net.

* Tumble = A shot played at the net to our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to somersault once or more times over the net
* Dropshot = A shot played from our overhead position to the Fore Court of our opponent's court
* Dribble = Any shot played from ones' own forecourt to the opponents' forecourt with the shuttle passing in close proximity to the net tape.
* Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke
* Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent
* Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally.

* Spinning Netplay = A shot played near the net to our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to spin (rotating) over the net
* Tumble = A shot played near the net to the our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to somersault once or more times over the net
* Dropshot = A shot played from our overhead position to the Fore Court of our opponent's court
* Dribble = Any shot played from ones' own forecourt to the opponents' forecourt with the shuttle passing in close proximity to the net tape.

For me, I prefer to use the term 'Attacking Clear'; to indicate that we are to give less time for our opponent to react and/or respond to this shot.

* Punch Clear = An overhead Clear executed to just clear over the highest reach that can be met by our opponent.
* Spinning Netplay = A shot played near the net to our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to spin (rotating) over the net
* Tumble = A shot played near the net to the our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to somersault once or more times over the net
* Dropshot = A shot played from our overhead position to the Fore Court of our opponent's court
* Dribble = Any shot played from ones' own forecourt to the opponents' forecourt with the shuttle passing in close proximity to the net tape.

* Spinning Netplay = A shot played near the net to our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to spin (rotating) over the net

OK, let's talk about Drives.

There are many different drive strokes/shots used at Badminton.

But a drive implies a hard and fast hitting shot that is intended to pass past our opponent's racket before he/she is ready/prepared to intercept the shuttlecock's path.

Here are some Drives, namely;
* Drive Service = A Service that is hit hard and fast, hoping to pass past a receiver before he/she is ready to intercept it
* Drive Return of Smash = In Doubles, a Drive Return of Smash is played/hit fast, to pass past the front player to the back player
* Drive from side line = A shot played horizontally along the side line to skim just over the net height, hit hard and fast
* etc, etc, ......

Please allow me (and other BCers) to have more time to post more info about other different Drives.
