Yesterday had the pleasure of eating this for the first time in absolutely ages. There I was, walking along the street, minding my own business, when the aroma just wafted through. It is very hard to find a street vendor selling this product as some government dept clamps down hard on these illegal vendors. Hence, the vendors come and go, with decreasing frequency of appearances. I haven't eaten 'smelly tofu' in absolutely ages, such is the rarity of it nowadays. For people who don't know, the smell is a bit like......hmm....hard to describe. Initally, I hated it..wouldn't even try. But then after seeing on a film how it was supposed to be really tasty with a bit of chilli sauce and sweet sauce, my curiosity was aroused. Now, I'm a fan. Funny thing about the smell is that you can smell it from very far away. But as you get closer, the smell disappears!! Very strange. Well, it is really popular. Just in that little period I was there, (less than 5 minutes), I think about 10-12 pieces had been sold. At HKD5, per piece, that is pretty good going. My mother, who loves durian, dares not try 'smelly tofu' Me, who hates durian, loves 'smelly tofu'. Strange
Strange indeed, Cheung. I dared not touch stinky tofu and durian when I was younger. Now, I can take both!
I would say this is just lik the question of: Which racket suits me best? Answer is... Personal Preference!
Seen so much of that Tofu on video but never had chance to experience it as no one in Msia has ventured on it. Neither have experience of "dirty noodles" made famous by Chow Sing Chi. But nothing compares to the smell of Msian Petai, the smelly pea/bean, the smell sticks to you after it passes to your system and can be detected many metres away.
Well, smelly tofu won't smell after it passes through your system but the aroma can be detected much further away than either petai or durian. Oh yes, and the smell is definately comparable to petai (yes, I ate that as well)...well more than comparable Is it true smelly tofu is common in Taiwan?
The texture is different between Taiwanese and Hong Kong style stinky tofu. The Taiwan style is actually fried bean curd with the characteristic stinky smell - heck, I like it . The Hong Kong style is not fried at all and resemble roasted bean curd (red roasting style as Cantonese would say).
Not quite sure when you describe the HK version. All the ones I've seen in HK are deep fried in oil as opposed to roasted
The HK style exterior may be crispy but the interior is velvet tofu. This is not so with the Taiwanese version.
Pete: there use to have one shop selling the smelly tofu (Taiwan version). This is locate at Westminster/No 6, Rmd, opposite the golf course and at the ground floor of one of the commercial complex. The eating area is on 2nd floor. Each disk is about C$2+ but you can drink the soy-drink as much as you can, free. I hope the shop is still there and the price is right.
I know Marky. I tried the place before with my friends. The stinky tofu isn't bad but I still prefer the HK version.
Umm...what's smelly tofu? lol. never heard of it....maybe you people changed it's original name? lol.
All I can thing of is "Bad-smelling" or "stingy-smelling" tofu. Both HK version and Taiwan version are two different character. I like the HK version too esp. when it is just done from the cooking and eat with mixing a lot of hot chilli and sweet sauses. However, it is WAY TOO oilly for health.
To Joanne : We eat our tofu as white tofu in Yong Tau Fu or as Soy milk or Tau Fu Fa. But Hk/Taiwan people ferment tofu pieces and then fry it, I think it has the extra taste of alcohol.
Hummm, really? I will have to eat more next time to get the drunk feeling and start playing baddie in the drunk style. DRUNKEN BADDIE STYLE!!!
Now, that I would like to see tonight! Pete, I should be able to make it to VRC tonight. Anyone else? Marky? Wondered if I should get hold of Viver and Badrad too. How about the others like Seot, 15Love, etc?
Oh WWC I will miss tonight games at VRC. I have a function tonight. Perhaps, I can spare myself after the event. Will you guys still be playing, say, from 12 am onwards? I really want to join in.
MARKY, COUNT ME IN. WWC, I WISH BADRAD COULD ATTEND TONIGHT. ALSO GET VIVER TO COME TOO. REGARDS, PETE
Pete Viver also has a function tonight but he might drop by after. Marky, don't know whether we will still be standing after 12 am.
