Am I right in thinking that there seem to be far more countries represented in this year's WC?

I can see players from so many countries in the main draw that I'm not used to seeing in the big tournaments (e.g. Belarus, South Africa, Israel, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Nigeria, etc).

Does it have something to do with the location of the WC or is it a good indication that badminton's popularity is increasing?

Err, not really. The countries are represented due to the limited number of entries allowed per country. Also, each continent needs to be represented irrespective of actual player ranking.
