I've seen this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVSNyan0g58 It's in French, @the end, they say someone like Lo Ying Ping earns 2K€ a month & Lin Dan 500K a year, i wanted to know if that was true. They also say 1/6 of Chinese ppl play this sport, i think they exaggerated.
I thought Lin Dan earn a little more than that? I heard him earning at least 1 million euros per year from commercial and advertisement. In my honest opinion, saying 1/6 of Chinese ppl playing badminton is a very conservative figure. Badminton is huge in Asia and is the second most popular sport world wide after soccer. Of course, badminton is not as popular in Europe/North america.
€500k is the one time payment for Lin Dan playing this year Super League. Lin Dan can earn other money from other domestic matches, IBF tournaments prize, and even more in commecial ads and attending ceremonies.
Lin Dan is top10 athletes earners in China.. If not mistaken his 2008 earning is about RMB10million Top of the chart is Yao Ming follow by Liu Xiang..
Yes, you are right. I saw the report as well. If I'm not mistaken, Lin Dan was ranked 7th or 8th (cant really recall) and his total earning for that year was somewhere close to the amount you mentioned. Still, Lin Dan is planet away from Yao Ming and Liu Xiang... hehe
you make it sound like badminton players get nothing for playing the sport...but you can definitely make money by coaching, etc as well. obviously, its a lot less than other racket sports like tennis though
It may be possible for professional badminton players to make money from endorsements than participating in tournaments.
As per Fortune magzine's estimation, Lin Dan earned about RMB15million last year, which is equivalent to €1.7 million.
